On August 27, 2024, Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). At just 35 years old, Shah’s ascension to this prestigious role marks him as the youngest ICC chairman in history.

He succeeds Greg Barclay, who chose not to pursue a third term after leading the ICC since 2020. Shah, who previously served as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will officially assume his new role on December 1, 2024.

According to a report by News18.com, Jay Shah’s election was far from contested. The ICC currently comprises 16 members, and the report reveals that Shah had the support of 15 of these members during the nomination process.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) notably remained a silent observer during the proceedings. A source was quoted as saying,

"There wasn't any word from PCB. Not that it was required because Shah had overwhelming support from the members. But the Pakistan board preferred to play the role of a spectator during the entire process."

Indian cricketers reacts to Shah's election

Jay Shah's election as ICC chairman has been met with widespread approval from the global cricketing community.

Prominent figures from Indian cricket, including coach Gautam Gambhir and star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, expressed their congratulations. Hardik Pandya also wished Shah well, underscoring the broad support he enjoys within the sport.
