In a heartwarming development for Indian cricket fans, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and promising middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer are targeting an Asia Cup return.

Both Bumrah and Iyer recently underwent surgeries on their troublesome back, and are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

Bumrah has not featured in a single competitive game since his recurring back issue flared up after he was rushed back into the set-up for a bilateral T20I series against Australia last September.

India's premier fast bowler across all three formats, Bumrah, first reported of discomfort in his troublesome back last July when the Men in Blue were in the UK.

Eventually, he missed the Asia Cup T20 but was slated to return for the T20 World Cup in Australia. However, Bumrah was rushed back into the set-up, and, as a result, he went on to miss the WC, the entire home season, IPL and the recent WTC final.

He underwent surgery in New Zealand earlier this February, and according to reports in ESPNCricinfo, Bumrah has started light bowling loads.

As far as Shreyas Iyer is concerned, his recurring back injury flared up during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and he had to be withdrawn from the playing XI mid-way through the 4th Test in Ahmedabad.

He subsequently missed the entire season of the IPL in order to undergo surgery. The right-handed batsman is likely to make a return ahead of the Asia Cup.

The 2023 edition of the Asia Cup will take place in Sri Lanka and Pakistan between August 31-September 17.
