Ireland Women vs South Africa Women | Players to watch out for

Ireland women will open their 2022/23 International summer when the Gaby Lewis-led unit takes on a powerful South African line-up in the first of the three T20Is in Dublin on Friday (June 03).

The three T20Is will be followed by three ICC Women's ODI Super League matches, marking Ireland's debut in the championship.

On that note, here's a look at five players to watch out for:

Gaby Lewis (Ireland)

The 21-year-old will create history on Friday as she will become the youngest Irish cricketer to lead her country.

She will also have the task of leading her batting unit against a strong Proteas attack. Lewis has been sensational with the bat in the last 12-15 months.

Since the start of January 2021, she has scored 325 runs in 10 innings at an average of 40.62 and a strike rate of 128.45 with the help of two 50+ scores, which also includes a hundred.

Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa)

The opening batter has been the bedrock of the Proteas line-up for several years now. She was in blistering form in the recent 50-over World Cup held in New Zealand and will look to carry it to the T20Is against the Irish.

Wolvaardt has scored the second-most number of runs for the Proteas since the start of 2021. In 8 games, she has accumulated 161 runs at an average of 53.66, and a strike rate of 161 with one 50+ score and the visitors will hope for similar returns in the forthcoming series.

Tazmin Britts (South Africa)

The 31-year-old opening batter, like Wolvaardt, has been sensational in recent times. In 5 games that she has played since January 2021, Britts has hammered 153 runs at an average of 76.50 and a strike rate of 104.79 with the help of two 50+ scores.

It will be interesting to see if she can carry her form in the fixtures against Ireland.

Shabnim Ismail (South Africa)

The right-arm fast bowler has been the spearhead of the South Africa attack for a number of years now.

She will once again be the key for the visitors in the upcoming three-match battle. In her last 6 T20I outings, Kapp has taken 11 wickets - the most by a South African bowler- at an average of 13 and a miserly economy rate of 6.5.

If Ireland have to succeed, they will need to find a way to counter Ismail.

Leah Paul (Ireland)

The 22-year-old left-arm orthodox has proved to be quite a handful in the game's shortest format ever since her debut in 2019.

In 20 games, she has taken 18 wickets at an average of 13.88, and her economy rate of 5.10 is quite sensational.

Since the start of 2021, Paul has been the leading wicket-taker for her side. In 10 innings, she has taken 12 wickets at an average of 11.65 and a barely believable economy rate of 4.66, which includes one four-wicket haul.

With the South Africans traditionally weak against the spinners, Leah Paul could be quite a handful.

Gaby Lewis on the cusp of two records on her captaincy debut against South Africa

Ireland Women’s team all-rounder Gaby Lewis is set to add a few more feathers to her already illustrious cap when the home side takes on South Africa Women in the opening T20I in Dublin on Friday (June 03). Gaby, 21, will not only become the youngest Irish captain, but she is also set to become the first daughter of a former Ireland cricketer to lead her country. Gaby's father, Alan Lewis, led the Irish men's cricket team 35 times during the 90s, and on Sunday, he will witness his daughter do the same. It will be a memorable occasion for young Gaby, who made her international debut at 13 against the Netherlands back in 2014. "I literally have no memory of the match except that it was in Rugby School. I do remember the girls welcomed me in with open arms and having Lucy and Lena around my age at the game was great," Lewis was quoted by the Belfast Telegraph. "I don't think you really realize the magnitude of the occasion when you are 13 but it must have been a great thing at the time," she added. Lewis also touched upon her father's massive influence on her career so far. She revealed that she still asks for advice from her father. "My dad was around the club for as long as I can remember, and I probably picked up a bat for the first time at the age of four. He was obviously a huge influence, although mum (Sharon) says 'don't forget about her' as she played a bit. So growing in a cricketing family it was a natural thing to do," she said. "I still ask dad for advice. He's always there and it's brilliant to have him about the house," she added. In her formative years, Gaby used to play a lot of Hockey, but she always knew which sport to prioritize. "When I had to choose one, it was always going to be cricket. I tried to keep them both going as long as I could but I did know cricket was what I wanted to pursue," she said. "It's amazing to think I've already played nearly 90 games, but hopefully, there's plenty more to come," Lewis concluded. Lewis has featured in 22 ODIs and 48 T20 games so far, scoring 505 and 995 runs, respectively, besides claiming 10 & 3 wickets.

SLC appoint Lasith Malinga as 'Bowling Strategy Coach' for Aus T20I series

Former Sri Lanka skipper Lasith Malinga has agreed to take up the role of the fast bowling coach for the three-match T20I series against Australia. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has issued a media release to confirm the development. They had invited three legends to take up the coaching duties of the national team against Australia in the upcoming ODI and T20I series. "Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan fast bowling legend and former captain of the ODI and T20I team, as the ‘Bowling Strategy Coach’ of the National Team for the white ball segment of the Australia Tour of Sri Lanka. Malinga, during the tour, will support Sri Lanka’s bowlers, providing tactical insight and technical expertise to help the on-field execution of strategic plans," the release stated. In the recently concluded season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, he played the role of bowling coach for the runner-up, Rajasthan Royals (RR). In his very first stint as a bowling coach with an IPL team, he created an impact straight away as the Royals ended their campaign being the runners-up. RR finished their group stage second behind the Titans. Malinga joined the team as a fast bowler coach. From the training session to the match, he looked very active, reflecting on the Royals' fast bowlers like Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, Obed McCoy, and Kuldeep Sen. During a career that spanned over 17 years, the right-arm fast bowler represented his country in 340 matches across the three formats, picking up 546 wickets. Malinga has been previously successful in his coaching job. Being the bowling strategy coach for Sri Lanka against Australia last February, he has done an incredible job for the IPL franchise.
