New Zealand, riding on Glenn Phillips's scintillating half-century knock and Lockie Ferguson's breathtaking spell, swatted away Ireland by 31 runs in the first T20I to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series on Monday, July 18 at Belfast.
Lockie Ferguson Show
The 174-run chase turned out to be a disaster for the hosts as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually crumbled out for 142 with 10 balls to spare.
Curtis Campher was the leading run-scorer for the Men in Green with 29 runs while Mark Adair also chipped in with 25 runs to avoid an embarrassing big margin loss against the touring side.
Lockie Ferguson was the chief architect of Ireland's batting collapse. The 31-year old returned with an outstanding figure of 4/14 in 3.2 overs.
Glenn Phillips Assault
Earlier, after being put to bat first, New Zealand were off to a shaky start, losing both of their openers – Martin Guptill and Finn Allen inside four overs with the scoreboard reading 29/2.
The wicket-keeper-batter Glenn Phillips and James Neesham helped the visitors dig themselves out of trouble. The duo went on to share a 46-run stand for the fifth wicket.
It was Phillips' counter-attacking knock of unbeaten 52-ball 69 which steered New Zealand to an imposing 173/8 off 20 overs.
Joshua Little was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland as he grabbed 4 wickets in his spell of 4 overs while conceding 35 runs.
