It wasn’t just another game for Ishan Kishan at the Wankhede. It was a return to the very place that once cheered his name but this time in enemy colours.
And while the bat didn’t do much talking, a heartwarming moment with old teammate and Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya stole the limelight.
Hardik Pandya Comforts Emotional Ishan Kishan After MI’s Win Over SRH
Match 33 of IPL 2025 saw Sunrisers Hyderabad face off against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede. But for Ishan Kishan, the match turned out to be one to forget. Coming in at No. 3, the southpaw was sent packing for just 2, stumped off Will Jacks. The crowd, which once roared every time he middled the ball, watched in silence as he walked back, head down.
SRH managed to put up 162/5, but MI made light work of the chase, winning with 11 balls and six wickets to spare. Kishan’s only highlight? A catch he took off Hardik Pandya, but by then, the game was already out of reach.
What followed after the game melted a million hearts. Visuals of Hardik Pandya, arm wrapped around a visibly dejected Kishan, went viral in no time. The former MI teammates shared a quiet moment.
Ishan Kishan’s Mumbai Indians Career
Ishan Kishan walked into the Mumbai Indians camp back in 2018 as a 19-year-old, priced at INR 6.2 crore, a big sum for a young lad from Jharkhand. The core of MI at the time: Rohit, Bumrah, Hardik and Krunal were the only ones earning more.
It wasn’t a smooth start. Across 2018 and 2019, Kishan managed just 376 runs. But MI backed him. They didn’t bench him after a few failures. That backing paid off. 2020 saw the best of Ishan Kishan. With 516 runs at a strike rate of 146, he ended up as MI’s top run-getter and helped them lift their fifth IPL title.
After 2020, both MI and Kishan hit a rough patch. No more titles, no more blistering knocks. Yet, the faith remained. So much so, that MI shelled out a record-breaking INR 15.25 crore in the 2022 mega auction.
By 2025, MI had moved on. They kept Rohit, Bumrah, Hardik, SKY, and Tilak. Kishan didn’t make the cut. Yet, the numbers don’t lie. Kishan still stands 6th on MI’s all-time run-scorers list: 2325 runs in 89 matches.
A New Chapter With Sunrisers Hyderabad
When Sunrisers Hyderabad picked Ishan Kishan ahead of IPL 2025, fans expected fireworks. And he delivered straight away. A blistering century in his debut match for SRH made headlines.
But the joy was short-lived. Seven games in, Kishan has 138 runs to his name at an average of 27.60, not terrible, but far from what he is capable of.
