South African batter Matthew Breetzke has drawn much attention for his outstanding performances in both domestic and international cricket. He is known for aggressive top-order batting and outstanding fielding skills, and at the age of 24, he will make his debut in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Making his ODI debut for South Africa in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand, Matthew has shown great resilience and patience as he slammed a half-century. An impressive knock from Breetzke on his debut for the Proteas as he took 68 balls to smash the fifty. He also hit three boundaries and one maximum to reach the big figure. He eventually converted his start to a century and became the 4th South African batter to slam a century on ODI debut.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bagged him in the 2025 IPL auction for INR 57 Lakhs. They seem confident that Breetzke will provide value in the fast-paced T20 format. The powerful hitting from Breetzke, as well as his stable rise in international cricket, will make LSG fans hopeful of a solid contribution to their team.
Breetzke's Early Career Days
His early days were marked by his performances in the South African Under-19 team and his dominance in domestic competitions. His ability to play under pressure was praised by Durban Super Giants' skipper Keshav Maharaj, who compared him to the great Virat Kohli. He further consolidated his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in T20s by ending as the top run-scorer in the 2022-23 CSA four-day first-class competition with an average of 60.58.
This form led to his selection for the South African T20I team in 2023 and a successful stint in the 2024 SA20 league. Despite not being part of South Africa’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad, Breetzke continued to impress.
