IPL 2022 | Umran Malik cruises past Bumrah to become the youngest player to pick 20 wickets

Sunrisers Hyderabad tearaway pace sensation Umran Malik added yet another feather to his cap on Tuesday night during his 3-wicket haul against the Mumbai Indians.

The young seamer from Jammu pushed his season's wicket tally past 20, and he has now become the youngest Indian to do so in a single season of the Indian Premier League.

Umran has achieved the feat at a tender age of just 22 years and 176 days, and he has leapfrogged the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, RP Singh, and Pragyan Ojha as far as taking 20 wickets in a single season is concerned.

Bumrah was the holder of the record before Umran. The champion Indian pacer achieved the milestone at the age of 23 years and 165 days during the 2017 edition of the IPL.

The first Indian to claim the coveted milestone in terms of being the youngest was left-arm seamer RP Singh, who achieved the feat during a groundbreaking season for eventual champions Deccan Chargers back in 2009.

RP, who also ended up winning the Purple Cap that season, was just 23 years and 166 days at the time.

Coming back to Umran, the young pacer is amidst a groundbreaking season.

Having impressed with his raw pace, Malik has also shown brilliant improvement in maintaining line and length.

He already holds the record for delivering the fastest ball this season, and in addition to this, the young bowler has also claimed a five-wicket haul.

Malik achieved that feat against the Gujarat Titans earlier in the season when they bamboozled the Hardik Pandya-led unit with pace and accuracy.

He finished with figures of 5/25 in four overs, and although SRH failed to win the game, Malik left a lasting impression.

Malik dished out yet another memorable performance on Tuesday night against the Mumbai Indians, finishing with figures of 3/23 in three overs.

He claimed the prized scalps of Ishan Kishan and an in-form Tilak Varma besides dismissing pinch-hitter, Daniel Sams.

Umran has thus far taken 21 wickets in 13 outings at an average of 20 and an economy rate of 8.94. He still has one more game left to push his tally close to 25 if SRH does not qualify for the playoffs.
