IPL 2022 | Shikhar Dhawan leapfrogs MR. IPL to become leading scorer against MI

Experienced Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan added yet another feather to his cap on Wednesday night as he leapfrogged former CSK batsman Suresh Raina to become the leading run-scorer against the Mumbai Indians.

Dhawan, representing the Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL season, achieved the feat in Wednesday's encounter against the five-time champions in Pune.

Before today's game, Raina held the record for most runs against the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. In 34 games, the champion southpaw scored 824 runs at an average of 29.4 and a strike rate of 139.4 with 7 50+ scores.

On the other hand, Dhawan has thus scored 871 runs in 27 innings at an average of 40.5 and a strike rate of 127.2 with as many as 6 50+ scores.

Former RCB cricketer AB de Villiers and the legendary Virat Kohli occupy the 3rd and 4th positions with 785 and 769 runs.

Meanwhile, Dhawan was in his element on Wednesday night as he racked up yet another IPL fifty, his 45th in the 15-year-old career in the cash-rich league.

Dhawan, who has previously represented the Mumbai Indians during the initial stages of the competition, alongside his skipper Mayank Agarwal, got Punjab Kings off to a brilliant start on Wednesday.

The duo took the attack to the Mumbai bowling unit, hammering 65 runs in the mandatory powerplay.

Mayank, who had endured a string of low scores in this season so far, was the chief aggressor among the duo. The stylish Karnataka batsman showcased his full range, especially against the spinners, as he hammered six fours and two sixes during his whirlwind knock of 52 off 32 deliveries.

The duo added 97 runs for the first wicket in just 9.3 overs before Murugan Ashwin saw the back of Agarwal.

At the time of writing, Punjab had lost the crucial wickets of Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, and Liam Livingstone. So the onus will now be on Shahrukh Khan to give the final flourish to the innings.
