IPL 2022 | Ranatunga urges SL players to return, stand alongside countrymen

The political turmoil in Sri Lanka shows no sign of stopping as the nation is facing one of its darkest days. The country has been plunged into one of its biggest financial crises, alongside a shortage of food supplies, fuel and other amenities.

Former Sri Lankan cricketer turned minister Arjuna Ranatunga recently urged the Sri Lankan players and support staff present in India for the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) to leave the tournament and return to the nation to stand alongside their fellow citizens.

"I really don't know, but some cricketers are lavishly playing in the IPL and haven't spoken about their country. But unfortunately, people are scared to speak against the government. These cricketers are also working for the cricket board under the ministry, and they are trying to protect their jobs. But now they have to take a step as some of the young cricketers also came forward and gave statements supporting the protest."

He further added, "I am sure you all know who are the players playing in the IPL. I don't want to mention, but I would want them to leave their job for a week and come in support of the protests."

At the moment, big names such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga are present in India for the ongoing IPL 2022 alongside various franchises acting as members in the team management and support staff.

Apart from legends, players such as Wanindu Hasaranga, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dushmanta Chameera and Maheesh Theeksana have participated in the league. Earlier this week, Hasaranga and Rajapaksa came out to support the protestors urging the government to help the residents in need amidst the financial crisis.

Earlier, in a special address to his countrymen, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa urged people to remain patient and stop protesting on the streets in order to enable the government to resolve the situation peacefully.
