Chris Woakes signs two-year contract extension with Warwickshire

England's bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes has renewed his commitment with his home county Warwickshire, as he penned a two-year contract extension and will now remain with the Edgbaston-based club until 2024. Woakes has bagged success across all three formats with the club, winning two County Championships and as many One-Day Cups, along with a T20 Blast title with the Bears. He will be looking to contribute more as Warwickshire look to defend their County Championship title in the ongoing season. The English international was part of the ICC World Cup-winning squad in 2019. The gritty all-rounder has represented 'The Three Lions' in 45 Tests, 106 ODIs and 16 T20Is. "It was always a dream of mine to take to the field at Edgbaston for the Bears when I started playing the game as a youngster," Woakes said on Warwickshire's website. "I love the club and feel incredibly proud every time that I put on the Bear and Ragged Staff and take to the field for my home county," he added. "Playing a part in the final stages of last year's Championship success was a very proud moment for me. Whilst we're the reigning county champions, there's so much potential for this squad to do more. We have some of the best young players in the game coming through our pathway, and I'm very keen to support their development and hopefully ensure that there can be a few more trophy wins in the coming years," the 33-year-old reckoned. Woakes is expected to return to action for the Bears during their home fixture against Northamptonshire, scheduled to start on May 12. Paul Farbrace, the Director of Warwickshire club, expressed his excitement about Woakes renewing his contract with the club as he said the Birmingham-born would be a terrific addition to the club. "As a county which is committed to developing our young cricketers, it's vital that they have someone like Chris to talk to and aspire to what he has achieved. We're very much aware that Chris is going to play so much more cricket for England across all three formats," Farbrace said. The England all-rounder has played in several leagues all around the world. He featured for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While in the Big Bash League (BBL), he has represented Sydney Thunder. In the upcoming edition of The Hundred, Woakes will don the jersey of Birmingham Phoenix.
