IPL 2022 | Michael Vaughan's stark remark on Rohit Sharma

Following Rohit Sharma’s slumping performance in the current edition of the IPL as a batter, and his failure as a captain for the Mumbai Indians, former English cricketer Michael Vaughan has expressed his concern about Sharma’s poor form.

Mumbai Indians, after their loss against the Chennai Super Kings last Thursday, registered an unwanted record. They became the first team in Indian Premier League history to lose seven matches in a season.

On account of Mumbai’s collapse, Vaughan suggested Rohit Sharma should take a breather from the game. He stated that the IPL franchise is past the point of contending for the trophy and should let young cricketers play for the rest of the matches to gain experience. And if they end up being knocked out of the tournament, Sharma should take a break from the sport.

Vaughan expressed that Indian cricketers play so much high profile cricket that from time to time, they may feel overburdened by it. And that a break from cricket might be beneficial for Rohit Sharma.

“Just take a breather. Just take your time. They play so much cricket, you have to pick and choose when you can take a breather. Rohit Sharma would probably be serving himself and the captaincy of India better by having a breather away from the game for a couple of games’ time.”

The right-handed opener has been out of form and hasn’t delivered even a single half-century in the IPL. His best score this season has been a staggering 41. Not only that, Sharma’s performance has been below par for the last few IPL seasons.

The Indian skipper, much the same as his franchise, has registered an unwanted record. He has now been dismissed for a duck 14 times, which is the most in IPL history. His poor form is a grave concern for the Indian squad as the T20 World Cup approaches.

Rohit has been a righteous captain to the Indian squad but hasn’t been performing with the bat. Fellow senior and former India men’s skipper, Virat Kohli, has also struggled to deliver runs and has registered two back-to-back golden ducks in the IPL.

The Indian team management and fans hope that the two find their footing before the World Cup scheduled for October this year.
