IPL 2022 | MI vs DC | Bumrah, David brings gloom for Delhi Capitals

Tim David's fireworks guided the Mumbai Indians (MI) to a win in their final league fixture of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 against Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 21.

Chasing 160 runs, Mumbai Indians' innings went at a snail's pace in the powerplay, Rohit Sharma's 13-ball 2 being one of the primary reasons behind it.

Ishan Kishan showed his prowess to an extent but as the case has been with him throughout the tournament, the southpaw failed to ride on the start and fell for 48 runs at the hands of Kuldeep Yadav.

Dewald Brevis had a decent outing with the bat, scoring 37 runs. However, he failed to get going as the Protea inside-edged as he went chasing a Shardul Thakur delivery.

With the required rate creeping up and the other batters of no help either, it was now down to Tim David to get MI past the finishing line. The man who once was dropped after a mere two failures, did not disappoint this time around.

Although David was given a reprieve as DC did not review off a caught-behind appeal, there was nothing else to complain about. The Singapore-born lit up the Wankhede Stadium with his brute striking. His 11-ball 34, eventually, decided the result.

Shardul Thakur claimed David's wicket but with Mumbai in the touching distance of a win, it did not really help DC much.

Ramandeep Singh smashed the final few hits as the Indians romped home with five wickets to spare.

With this defeat, it is the end of the road for Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore are the fourth time to enter the IPL 2022 playoffs.

Earlier in the day, after being put to bat, Delhi Capitals were rocked by Jasprit Bumrah, who reduced their top-order to dust. The fiery speedster pushed the Capitals down on the mat, dismissing Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh for 24 runs and a duck respectively.

Daniel Sams continued with his knack of taking early wickets as this time, it was David Warner at the receiving end.

Mayank Markande also joined the party and added the wicket of Sarfaraz Khan under his belt.

With the score reading 50/4 in 8.4 overs, DC's innings entered into a rebuilding phase as Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell carefully went along with their business. At first, the swashbuckling duo restricted their shots, but the moment they got into their own, it was carnage everywhere.

After MI's skipper Rohit handed the ball to Ramandeep Singh, Pant went bonkers smashing two fours and a six in the over. However, the medium-pacer made a comeback in style, getting rid of the danger-man.

Soon after, Bumrah's yorker castled Powell, it was upon Axar Patel to deliver the goods during the end overs, and the southpaw did so while playing a crucial cameo of 19 runs.

Ultimately, DC finished at 159/7; the target which did not prove to be enough.

Brief scores:

Delhi Capitals - 159/7 (20)

Rovman Powell 43(34), Rishabh Pant 39(33);

Jasprit Bumrah 3-25 (4), Ramandeep Singh 2-29 (2)

Mumbai Indians - 160/5 (19.1)

Ishan Kishan 48(35), Dewald Brevis 37(33);

Shardul Thakur 2-32 (3), Anrich Nortje 2-37 (4)

Mumbai Indians won by five wickets.

'Expectation is 3-0 but it won't be easy': WI assistant coach Roddy Estwick

West Indies assistant coach Roddy Estwick has stressed the importance of his team not taking anything for granted heading into the Cricket World Cup Super League series against the Netherlands, which begins on the 31st of May. Speaking to the media on Friday, Estwick wasn't interested in names or favourites heading into the series but employed that his team must focus on the opportunity ahead. "Cricket is never played on paper. It is played on grass, and being favourites count for nothing. We start favorites in Holland but [in our next series] we should not start favorites in Pakistan [so] people have got to look at it as the opportunity to represent the West Indies. Our standards should not be lowered to accommodate the opposition," he powerfully expressed. The upcoming fixture will be the first assignment for newly-appointed captain Nicholas Pooran who will have a relatively inexperienced team to work with. Estwick also touched on the importance of this series for the new skipper, "(this series) gives Pooran a chance to forge his identity with the senior players not around. But, at the end of the day, the decision-making falls with Pooran, and it is up to the players to execute their skills." Estwick also spoke on Shimron Hetmyer, who is currently having a tremendous season with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and has been a massive part of his team finishing in the top two in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he will not be present in the maroon due to the birth of his child. "If someone like Hetmyer is not playing, you will miss his talent. He is having an outstanding season for the Rajasthan Royals [but] has been asked not to be selected for this tour so we will have to get on without him. We do hope he will make himself available for future tours," Estwick stated. The 25-year-old who would have last represented the Windies at the T20 World Cup last year is seen as one of the future leaders of the WI batting lineup and will no doubt leave a massive void in the top order. One of the major challenges facing the West Indies will be foreign conditions, an area that Estwick sees as significant, "the major challenge will be adjusting to the conditions and pitches. We don't know what the conditions will be like in Holland. The key thing is focusing on us, making sure that we are properly prepared to get as much information while practicing out of the conditions in the three days before." The West Indies, who currently sit in tenth place in the Super League standings, will start the series as favorites against the bottom of the table Netherlands who have only managed two wins thus far. However, the Dutch will relish the opportunity to welcome a relatively young West Indies team to their backyard for battle.
