IPL 2022 | Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel's air show help DC stun Paltan

Delhi Capitals stunned the five-time champions Mumbai Indians by four wickets in the second match of the Indian Premier League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Chasing a target of 178, Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel stitched a partnership of 75 runs for the seventh wicket to take the team home. Lalit (48 not out) and Axar (38 not out) showcased fine counter-attacking skills and mauled Mumbai's bowling attack to seal the deal with ten balls to spare.

Openers Prithvi Shaw (38) and Tim Seifert (21) provided the momentum, but the middle-order batters - Mandeep Singh (0) and skipper Rishabh Pant (1) - failed to continue that pace. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur played a quickfire cameo of 21 runs from 11 balls. For Mumbai, Basil Thampi and Murugan Ashwin scalped 3 and 2 wickets respectively, while debutant Tymal Mills took one wicket.

Earlier, a fascinating knock from the stylish batsman Ishan Kishan (81 not out) and skipper Rohit Sharma (41) helped Mumbai Indians to put 177 for five on the board. While the newcomer, Tilak Varma, hit some calculative boundaries and scored 22 runs from 15 balls. However, Overseas star Tim David and Daniel Sams, making their debut for Mumbai, scored 12 and unbeaten seven runs, respectively.

For Delhi, spinner Kuldeep Yadav stole the show and pegged back Mumbai with the crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma, Anmolpreet Singh and Kieron Pollard, while Khaleel Ahmed also scalped a couple of wickets.

Mumbai enjoyed a great start after being put in to bat first. Their openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma amassed 53 runs in the first powerplay without the loss of any wickets.

Therefore, Mumbai Indians managed to score 65/0 in the first eight overs as Delhi bowlers looked clueless against experienced Mumbai Indians openers. But in the very next over, the ace-spinner Kuldeep Yadav got Delhi their first breakthrough as chinaman sent Mumbai's skipper back in the dressing room.

Brief Score:

Mumbai Indians - 177/5 (20)

Ishan Kishan 81 not out, Rohit 41;

Kuldeep Yadav 3/18

Delhi 179/6 (18.2)
Lalit Yadav 48*, Axar Patel 38*;

Basil Thampi 3/35

Delhi Capitals won by four wickets.

"Absolutely disappointing series, this; Absolute nonsense"- Shoaib Akhtar reacts to Pakistan's Test series defeat to Australia

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has expressed his disappointment after the 1-nil series defeat that the Babar Azam-led unit has suffered at the hands of visitors Australia. Australia's historic tour of Pakistan proved to be a momentous one for the Pat Cummins-led side, becoming only the third team from their nation to win a Test series in an Asian nation. After a high-scoring rubber in the first Test in Rawalpindi, where the visitors managed just four wickets across both innings, the Aussie attack, especially their pacers, turned up in Karachi Lahore as they made a mockery of Pakistan's batting unit using reverse swing. While Pakistan escaped with a draw in Karachi, they couldn't do the same in the third Test as Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon combined to knock over the home side on the final day. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Akhtar lauded the aggressive mindset of the Australians while lambasting the defensive approach of both his team and the PCB. "I am very happy for Australia and I am very disappointed for Pakistan. They played with a very defensive mindset, made bad pitches, tried to draw the series, and fell into the pit themselves," Akhtar said. "Absolutely disappointing series, this. Absolute nonsense. The mindset of both, the Pakistan Cricket Board and probably the team management was to draw this series. Neither they should win, nor us; just end this series in a draw," he added. Cummins elevated his already soaring status to new heights courtesy of his aggressive captaincy and exploits with the ball in Lahore. And, Akhtar was full of praise for the Aussie captain. "Pat Cummins is a such a 'perky' leader. Gave Pakistan a small total and ran through them. Hats off to him. You're a great bowler and captain," Akh Cummins claimed five wickets in the first innings of the Lahore Test, which led to Pakistan losing as many as 7 wickets for just 20 runs. He also claimed crucial wickets of Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan in the second innings before taking the final wicket, which sealed Australia's 1-0 series win; their first away from home since 2016 and first in Asia since 2011.

'Thought 275 was a good total' - Mithali Raj rues after tournament exit

As the world cup campaign of India's women's team drew curtains on Sunday, skipper Mithali Raj stood behind her players by saying, 'she is proud of the girls'. India lost to South Africa in their final group game, which had to be won for them to proceed further in the tournament. While the openers, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Varma, came out all guns blazing as the Indian innings took off in a grand style, it was a poor finish that could carry the side to a total of only 274 runs. Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur anchored the ship and scored 68 and 48 runs, respectively. "I personally feel the girls gave it all, it was an important game, was a good game, it ended our campaign, but I'm proud of the girls for coming so far," said Mithali in the post-match interview. With the batters doing a decent job, the bowlers couldn't get the team through to the semis. However, they failed in the task, courtesy of a few missed opportunities, as India got knocked out of the World Cup. Mithali reckoned that the bowlers should have been able to restrict South Africa, but Jhulan Goswami's absence in the match was a huge miss for them. "With the bowlers we had, I thought 275 was a good total, we had defended similar totals in the past. Of course, her experience (on missing Jhulan Goswami) would have added a lot, but this was an exposure for the other girls to step up," she added. Further, the 39-year-old legend thanked fans for their overwhelming support and urged them to keep on cheering for the Blue Brigade. "Everything should come to an end, it'll take time to settle the emotions, but that is a sport. Thanks to everyone who turned out for every Indian game, it was nice to hear your cheers and keep supporting the girls and the Indian women's team in the future," Mithali signed off.
