IPL 2022 | It's working well because we communicate consistently: Abhishek Sharma on batting alongside Williamson

Despite not having an invincible squad on paper, the Sunrisers Hyderabad have been impressive in this year's IPL. In their most recent encounter, SRH registered a one-sided victory over RCB by nine wickets, thereby moving to the second spot in the points table.

A fair share of credit for SRH's success should be given to the young opener Abhishek Sharma as the talented southpaw from Punjab is having his best IPL season with the bat this year. Statistically, Abhishek has slammed 220 runs from 7 innings at an average of 31.43 and is currently the highest run-getter for the Kane Williamson-led team.

Although he was primarily used as a lower middle-order batter in previous IPL seasons, his promotion to the top alongside Williamson has worked wonders for him in IPL 2022.

When enquired about his improved returns as an opener, Abhishek revealed that he always wanted to bat at the top and is enjoying his role. On forming a great opening pair with Williamson, the promising allrounder said that they always have a chat related to their game plan between overs and that conversation has worked well for them.

"I think I always wanted to play in this position for any of my teams, and I was just waiting for my opportunity. So when they decided to give me the opening position, I was really excited. Obviously, we have a great support staff with us, so I keep heeding their help, and that's what's helping me," Sharma said.

"It's working really well for us because we've been talking almost on every ball in between the wickets, talking about the game, how it's coming, how the next ball we might play. So that's helping," he further added.

The stylish left-handed batter also credited SRH's batting coach Brian Lara by saying that he has learned a lot of things from the Caribbean legend that has helped him develop various aspects of his batting to a great extent.

"100%, I've been learning my best from him because we all know what he did for the country and for cricket. So I've been trying my best for him," the 21-year-old concluded.

SRH will lock horns with the table-toppers Gujarat Titans in their next game on April 27 in Mumbai.
