IPL 2022 | 'I want to take pressure with my experience so that the others can play freely' - Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya had a great start to his IPL captaincy stint as his side; Gujarat Titans, won by five wickets against Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (March 29). Gujarat Titans won the toss, opted to bowl, and got off to a flying start as the speedster Mohammed Shami removed KL Rahul for a duck.

Then, he removed Quinton de Kock too in his next over. However, the fifties from Deepak Hooda and Ayush Badoni guided them to put up 158 on the board after their allotted 20 overs. While chasing, Gujarat lost the opener, Shubman Gill, for a duck. But Matthew Wade scored 30, and some quick-fire cameos from their middle-order batters guided them to victory with 2 balls to spare.

Mohammed Shami, who won the Man of the Match for his brilliant spell of 3/25, said, "I was warmed up well. It was important to get a good start in the first match. I looked to bowl a Test-match line and length here. When the ball comes out of your hand like that ... (smiles). I have worked very hard on this seam position. People say it is god-gifted, but that's not the case. I try to come round the wicket to a leftie and make that angle because that's the most uncomfortable thing for them. So I look to do that. Hardik asked me if I wanted the fourth over on the trot, but I told him to hold me back."

On the other hand, winning captain Hardik Pandya was happy, and he opined on his batting position. He stated that he wanted to bat at number four so that he could absorb the pressure from the others and they could play freely then.

Hardik Pandya said, "This was the right game for us to be on either side and learn, but we have learnt a lot by winning. Shami is known for his seam positions, and he got us to a great start. We would have any day taken 160 on this wicket. Mostly I'll bat at number four because I want to take pressure with my experience so that the others can play freely. We want to win as a team, and nobody can take the contribution away from us anyway. It was quite humid so I wouldn't have finished Shami's spell. Manohar is some talent to look at with the talent he has. He is someone who you are going to hear about in the future. Tewatia was sensational as well."

He even mentioned that getting out to his brother Krunal would have hurt more if they lost the game. Pandya even shared that their family is neutral about their playing for the different franchises, and they are happy too.

"Getting out to Krunal would have pinched me more had we lost, but now the family is neutral and happy. He got me out, and we won the match," he again shared.

Meanwhile, Rahul Tewatia, who scored a 24-ball 40 and helped his side win, said that the wicket was good to bat on, and he had a great discussion with the veteran David Miller.

He said, "The wicket was good, and the communication between Miller and me was to take the game deep, and during the strategic break, I told Miller I would take chances in the next over as the boundary was smaller on the leg-side, and the ball wasn't spinning much. Bishnoi was bowling those googlies, and after that reverse sweep, the situation was such that I had to go after the bowler and play my shots.

During our camp, I saw Abhinav's batting, and he is a very clean striker and the X-factor of our team, and we have been playing together for the last few weeks now, and I had complete trust in him that he would play his shots. Playing your shots in the first game with that confidence is really pleasing to see. The plan is to concentrate on the process, which we did during the practice. Ashish (Nehra) has made sure that everyone in the squad is in a happy mood."

PAK v AUS | 1st ODI | Match Preview, Predictions, Probable XI, Fantasy XI

The caravan of Australia's historic tour of Pakistan rolls on. The Aaron Finch-led unit is set to lock horns with Babar Azam's men in a three-match ODI series, starting at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Monday (March 29). Unlike the Test series, the build-up to the ODI leg of the Australian tour has been relatively sedate. The major reason behind it is the unavailability of the number of first-choice Australian players for various reasons. While David Warner, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc have been rested, Steven Smith, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis have been ruled out due to injuries and in the latter's case, Covid-19. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell is unavailable due to his wedding. With Inglis and Warner not available, Ben McDermott is likely to partner skipper Finch at the top of the order while Marnus Labuschagne will slot in in place of Steven Smith. With Mitch Marsh unavailable, Finch confirmed that all-rounder Cameron Green will feature in the starting XI on Monday. Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Nathan Ellis will likely spearhead the pace department, while Adam Zampa will lead the spin arena. Since the last World Cup, Australia has been in a rich vein of form in this format. With series wins over England, India and the West Indies, they are well placed to gain automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup. That said, it won't be easy for them to continue with their winning streak considering that they are without a majority of their first-choice players and are up against a solid Pakistani outfit, which will be gunning for redemption following a Test series defeat. Pakistan were whitewashed 3-nil by a severely depleted England side during their last assignment in the format last summer. And once again, their batting unit will revolve around the quartet of Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar and Mohammad Rizwan. Shadab Khan is coming off a sensational PSL, where he performed brilliantly with both bat and ball, but he won't be available for the first couple of ODIs due to a groin injury. Uncapped spinner Asif Afridi and left-hander batsman Mohammad Harris will likely slot in the starting XI, while Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali will lead the pace arena. Match Details Date: 29th March 2022 Time: 03:30 PM IST Venue: Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore Broadcast: Sony Six, Sony Six HD, SonyLiV app and website Pitch Report: The 22-yard strip at the Gaddafi Stadium has been a safe haven for batters, as was evident in the recent PSL. Ness Wadia expresses interest in buying a Women IPL franchise

Punjab Kings (PBKS) co-owner Ness Wadia has affirmed his interest in buying a franchise in the Women's Indian Premier League. Over the last few years, calls for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to start the Women's version of the T20 league have intensified. While the BCCI have staged a three-team Challenger's Trophy during the men's IPL, a full-fledged version of the same is yet to see the light of the day. Last week, the IPL governing council proposed a 5-6 team Women's T20 league from next year onwards. Following the development, Wadia said that he would be more than interested to stake a claim in one of the franchises as he feels that women's cricket is on an upward curve and deserves a league of its own. "We would be more than interested in that (Women's IPL). IPL for women is long overdue. Also, it would be very special whenever that happens. Women's cricket has really developed over the years," the Punjab co-owner told News18. "The World Cup is going on right now. So, there is so much interest for the women's game. It was heartbreaking to see India's women's team lose yesterday," he added. Wadia also revealed that he had previously discussed the idea of Women IPL with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah. "We discussed with Jay Shah and Sourav Ganguly and they were more than happy to go ahead with it. The national anthem is played in sporting leagues in the USA. I am a die hard patriot and was overjoyed when it (National Anthem) was played. It is the Indian Premier League after all," Wadia added. When asked the base price he'd like to bid for the women's franchise, Wadia said that it's for the BCCI to decide, but he exuded confidence in the fact that the tournament will be a financial success. It shall be interesting to see when the Women IPL finally sees the light of the day.
