An epic onslaught from Rahul Tewatia (40* off 24 deliveries) and useful cameos from David Miller (30 off 21 deliveries) and Abhinav Manohar (15* off 7 deliveries) have helped Gujarat Titans (GT) get off to a winning start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) journey against fellow debutants Lucknow Super Giants.

Chasing 159, the Titans looked down and out at the 15-over stage after they had managed just 19 runs for the loss of Matthew Wade and skipper Hardik Pandya in the previous five overs.

Gujarat needed something special with 68 runs more to get in the last five overs, and that is exactly what they got from Tewatia and Miller.


The two southpaws took the attack to Deepak Hooda and Ravi Bishnoi, smashing them for as many as three sixes and four boundaries to reduce the equation to just 29 off the last 18 deliveries.


Avesh Khan got smashed for a six on the second delivery of the 18th over by Miller, but he came back brilliantly to concede just one off the next four, including the wicket of the South African basher.


Rahul's captaincy left a lot to be desired as he did not complete the quota of Dushmantha Chameera. He did bring him in the attack to bowl the penultimate over, but Manohar smashed the Sri Lankan for a couple of fours before Tewatia sealed the deal with another boundary in the final over.


Chameera, who knocked over Shubman Gill (0) and Vijay Shankar (4) cheaply in the powerplay, and Krunal Pandya gave away just 17 in his four overs besides picking the prized scalp of his brother Hardik, were the pick of the bowlers for Lucknow.

Earlier, Lucknow Supergiants rode on the brilliance of uncapped debutant Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda to recover from a desperate position to post a defendable total of 6-158 in 20 overs.

Batting first, Lucknow got off to the worst possible start as Gujarat Titans seamer Mohammed Shami rocked their top-order with a brilliant display of seam bowling.

Shami knocked over LSG skipper KL Rahul with a brilliant full-length delivery, which nipped away a fraction to take Rahul's outside edge.

Shami was in his element, and he soon accounted for another big fish in the form of Quinton de Kock, courtesy of a vicious nip-backer.

Varun Aaron dismissed Evin Lewis, while Manish Pandey met the same fate as QDK as he was late to react to a delivery that jagged back into him to shatter his off-stump.

Lucknow finished the powerplay at 32/4, and with an inconsistent Deepak Hooda and debutant Ayush Badoni at the crease, it looked all doom and gloom for the Lucknow franchise.

However, in a sensational turn of events, Hooda and then Badoni insinuated a sensational counterattack to bring their side back in the contest.

Badoni and Hooda laid into Rashid Khan and Lockie Ferguson and unleashed some breathtaking strokes; including slog sweeps, pull shots and lofted drives.

Hooda smashed a 41-ball 55 with the help of six fours and two sixes, and while he perished for the cause, Badoni (54 off 41 deliveries), along with Krunal Pandya (21* off 13 deliveries), ensured that Lucknow finished their innings at 158/6. They scored as many as 95 runs in their last 12 overs.

Shami (3/25 in 4 overs) was adjudged the 'Player of the Match' for his sensational spell of bowling.

Ness Wadia expresses interest in buying a Women IPL franchise

Punjab Kings (PBKS) co-owner Ness Wadia has affirmed his interest in buying a franchise in the Women's Indian Premier League. Over the last few years, calls for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to start the Women's version of the T20 league have intensified. While the BCCI have staged a three-team Challenger's Trophy during the men's IPL, a full-fledged version of the same is yet to see the light of the day. Last week, the IPL governing council proposed a 5-6 team Women's T20 league from next year onwards. Following the development, Wadia said that he would be more than interested to stake a claim in one of the franchises as he feels that women's cricket is on an upward curve and deserves a league of its own. "We would be more than interested in that (Women's IPL). IPL for women is long overdue. Also, it would be very special whenever that happens. Women's cricket has really developed over the years," the Punjab co-owner told News18. "The World Cup is going on right now. So, there is so much interest for the women's game. It was heartbreaking to see India's women's team lose yesterday," he added. Wadia also revealed that he had previously discussed the idea of Women IPL with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah. "We discussed with Jay Shah and Sourav Ganguly and they were more than happy to go ahead with it. The national anthem is played in sporting leagues in the USA. I am a die hard patriot and was overjoyed when it (National Anthem) was played. It is the Indian Premier League after all," Wadia added. When asked the base price he'd like to bid for the women's franchise, Wadia said that it's for the BCCI to decide, but he exuded confidence in the fact that the tournament will be a financial success. It shall be interesting to see when the Women IPL finally sees the light of the day.

Finch confirms Cameron Green as Marsh’s replacement; Matt Renshaw to join as cover

Seam-bowling all-rounder Cameron Green will likely replace the injured Mitchell Marsh in Australia's starting XI during the forthcoming ODI series against Pakistan. Australia dealt with a massive blow on the eve of the ODI series opener in Lahore when all-rounder Mitchell Marsh suffered a hip injury during the fielding drills. An official statement from Cricket Australia confirmed that Marsh has suffered a 'low-grade hip flexor strain', and skipper Finch confirmed during a media interaction that the Western Australian all-rounder would miss all three games of the ODI series. "I don't think he'll be available for this series based on how he was feeling yesterday," Finch said. "He sustained that yesterday in a fielding drill. It was a high-intensity, lateral movement drill. He added: "He bent down to pick it up one-handed and went to throw and felt a twinge in his hip flexor." Marsh's unavailability opens the doors for Test all-rounder Cameron Green, who has played just 1 ODI in his career thus far- vs India in December 2020. Finch heaped high praise on Green, stating that the all-rounder's impact with both bat and ball cannot be understated. "Cam will play and probably bat in the middle-order role. We've seen he's a super talented cricketer. His impact with the bat and ball can't be understated," Finch said. "We've still got a really solid idea of what our squad and out 11 would look like if the World Cup was tomorrow. It's about making sure we are building that depth. Josh Inglis tests Covid positive; ruled out of the 1st ODI vs Pakistan

Problems continue to mount for the Australian cricket team ahead of their upcoming ODI series in Pakistan. Their already depleted squad has been further affected, with wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis testing positive for Covid-19 on Monday. Inglis, who was primed to open the innings alongside skipper Aaron Finch, will not feature in the first couple of ODIs as he is required to isolate for five days. Confirming the development via an official statement, Cricket Australia said: "The remainder of the squad returned negative results following routine daily testing." The development comes after Australia were dealt with another body blow on Monday when a hip injury ruled all-rounder Mitchell Marsh out of the first ODI. Additionally, the West Australian is likely to miss the entire series. CA confirmed the same, stating that Marsh had suffered a 'low-grade hip flexor strain'. "Marsh will be managed clinically with a view to potentially returning to play later in the series," the statement stated. The dual body blows have further depleted Australia's resources, which are already without the services of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, David Warner and Josh Hazlewood. While the quartet has been rested, Steve Smith and Kane Richardson have also been ruled out due to their respective injuries. "It was unfortunate that with (Smith's) elbow, it just keeps flaring up. That's a reflection of a guy who's got everything that he can out of himself over the last couple of years and has batted so much that that is probably an injury that just needs to be monitored over and over," said Aaron Finch. "In terms of his role within the side, I think that we saw a really flexible role that he's played over the last couple of years when he's played T20 cricket, he's batted at three and done a really good job. He's batted in the middle and done a really good job as well and got us some really important runs. So, I'm confident that we know what we're going to get every day that he turns up," he added. Also, fellow Western Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is expected to replace Marsh in the playing XI, while Travis Head is expected to open the innings in the absence of Warner and Inglis. The three-match ODI series will get underway in Lahore from March 29.
