  • Ipl 2022 Ashwin Amasses Praise From Sangakkara After The Former Becomes First To Retire Out

IPL 2022 | Ashwin amasses praise from Sangakkara after the former becomes first to 'retire out'

Fabled Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin scripted history on Sunday (April 11) night during the game against the Lucknow Super Giants as he became the first batter in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to be 'retired out'.

Ashwin, who has scored a priceless 23-ball 28 during a crucial fifth wicket-stand with Shimron Hetmyer, walked back to the dressing room with ten balls in the innings to spare.

The idea behind the move by Ashwin and the Rajasthan Royals management was to get a specialist batter in Riyan Parag in the middle.

Parag hammered a six during his 4-ball 8 while Hetmyer carried on his blitz to help the Royals rack up 166 in 20 overs.

This is the first time a batter has 'retired out' in the IPL, and the move has garnered much attention. It is understood that the ICC is mulling over introducing the concept in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

According to the rules, a batsman is declared 'retired out' if he decides to walk back to the dressing room without the consent of the fielding umpire.

Law 25.4.3 states: "If a batter retires for any reason other than (injury or illness) ... the innings of that batter may be resumed only with the consent of the opposing captain. If for any reason his/her innings is not resumed, that batter is to be recorded as 'Retired - out'."

Royals' Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara was all praise for Ashwin following Rajasthan's three-run win over Lucknow.

Speaking to the media after the game, Sangakkara said that it was Ashwin himself who was asking from the field as to when he should retire.

Sangakkara revealed that Ashwin and the management had discussed the ploy during the innings.

"Ashwin himself was asking from the field as well, and we had discussed it just before that, as to what we would do," Sangakkara said.

"I thought the way Ashwin handled that situation, walking in (in the 10th over) under pressure, the way he batted to support the team. And then finally, (he) sacrificed himself in terms of being retired out, (which) was just magnificent. And then he went out in the field and backed it up with an excellent, excellent bowling effort," he added.

As it turned out, Rajasthan eventually defended their total of 166 thanks to brilliant powerplay and middle-over bowling by Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal, respectively and a fantastic final over by Kuldeep Sen, who defended 15 against a rampaging Marcus Stoinis.

'Retire out' concept has been previously employed in Test series by the West Indies and Sri Lanka in 1982/83 and 2001, respectively.

The Sydney Sixers also employed it in the final of the recent Big Bash League season.

SA vs BAN | South Africa becomes the 1st team to use COVID-19 substitutes in international cricket

In a first, the South African cricket team replaced Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder with Khaya Zondo and Glenton Stuurman in their playing XI on Monday to become the first side to use COVID-19 substitutes in international cricket. It happened ahead of what turned out to be the final day of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh when two members of the Proteas' playing XI- Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder- tested positive for COVID-19. Confirming the development, Cricket South Africa (CSA) released an official statement that read: "Khaya Zondo will make his Test debut on Day 4 of the 2nd #BetwayTest against Bangladesh after Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder tested positive for Covid-19. The pair replaced with Zondo and Glenton Stuurman." Speaking on the development, CSA's chief medical officer Dr. Shuaib Manjira described it as an unfortunate but expected situation given the series was being played in a managed environment where the movement of players was allowed and not in a strict bio-bubble. "This is an unfortunate situation, but not unexpected after the decision was made to have this tour under the Managed Event Environment (MEE) protocol, rather than the strict Bio-safe Environment (BSE) Protocol as was previously the case," Manjira said. "This is in line with the country's policy in revoking the Disaster Management Act concerning the pandemic and the huge mental strain that a bubble environment induces," he added. Also, this is the first-ever instance of a side opting for Covid-19 substitutes in international cricket. The proliferation of COVID-19 in the South African camp and the subsequent Covid replacements did not have any bearing on the match as the Proteas thumped a hapless Bangladesh unit by a whopping 332 runs. Bangladesh's second innings proved to be an exact carbon copy of the Durban Test, where they were rolled over by the spin-duo of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. A similar sort of thing happened at Port Elizabeth on the 4th day as Maharaj once again claimed a seven-wicket-haul, with Harmer wiping out the rest. Maharaj finished with figures of 7/40 in 12 overs as Bangladesh were shot out for a mere 80 in just 23.3 overs. Thanks to a commanding win in PE, South Africa wrapped a successful summer of Test cricket, which saw them beat India 2-1 and Bangladesh 2-0 at home and eke out a draw 1-1 in New Zealand.

IPL 2022 | SRH vs GT | Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls the most expensive 1st over in IPL history

Sunrisers Hyderabad's ace seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar created an unwanted record to his name on Monday night as he bowled the most expensive first over in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Deciding to bowl first in an all-important game against the Gujarat Titans (GT), the Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to the worst possible start as their marquee pacer Bhuvneshwar failed to control his line and length. Bhuvi conceded as many as 17 runs in the first over, which consisted of nine deliveries. He started with an outswinger to Matthew Wade, which proceeded to take the outside edge off the Australian wicketkeeper's bat to run away for a boundary. Bhuvi struggled to control his line against the left-handed Wade and was guilty of dishing it well down the leg-side, offering no chance to the wicketkeeper to collect the ball. As a result, the ball dribbled away for another boundary. He repeated the same against Shubman Gill on the next delivery, although it wasn't wide enough to evade the keeper. He tested Gill outside the off-stump, but just as it looked like the Indian international was getting back to his former self, the change in angle to the left and right-hander proved to be his undoing. As a result, the Uttar Pradesh cricketer dished out yet another leg-side wide to give five easy runs to the Gujarat Titans. He finally got his radar right in the last two deliveries of the over against Wade, eventually ending it with a couple of dot balls. Bhuvi ended up conceding 17 runs, which is now the record for most runs conceded by a bowler in the opening over of an IPL game. The right-arm swing bowler did redeem himself in his next over as he dismissed an in-form Shubman Gill for a 9-ball 7. But the wicket was mostly thanks to the fielding effort of Rahul Tripathi, who dived to his left to claim a stunning grab after Gill tried to punch a harmless half-volley past extra-cover. At the time of writing, the Titans had moved registered a total of 162 runs, with skipper Hardik Pandya top-scoring with a half-century.
