IPL 2021 | RCB vs PBKS: Twitter reacts as third umpires continue to make blunders in the UAE leg

The third umpires in the Indian Premier League have come under the radar of the fans after some very pathetic decision making in the last three days. The latest blunder was made when Ravi Bishnoi managed to get a nick on the bat of a reverse sweeping Devdutt Padikkal in the eighth over of the Royal Challengers Bangalore innings.

While the onfield umpire gave not out, KL Rahul, the captain and wicketkeeper of the Punjab Kings, who caught the ball immediately asked for a decision review and the call was sent upstairs to the third umpire. In the Ultraedge, it seemed very clear that the ball had got a feather touch of the gloves. However, everyone was just dumbfounded to see the not-out decision on the big screen.

Earlier, in another match involving Punjab Kings, the third umpire had given KL Rahul controversially not out when everyone thought that he was caught cleanly by Rahul Tripathi against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Although Padikkal couldn't make much of that opportunity, because of that call, Punjab also lost its review and that lingered on the mind of skipper Rahul. He even dropped Glenn Maxwell on nought and as a consequence, he went on to top score for the Challengers and with the help of his 57 off 33 balls, the team got past 160, which is a tough score at Sharjah.

Devon Conway outlines New Zealand's 'massive goal' of wining Tests in India

One of New Zealand’s newest sensations with the bat, Devon Conway, has said that defeating India on their home soil in the upcoming series will be a “massive goal” and “serious achievement” for the Blackcaps and rated the challenge tougher than defeating the Virat Kohli’s men in the ICC World Test Championship final earlier this year. He "Definitely. That's a massive goal that we'd like to achieve. To beat India in their home conditions is probably a bigger challenge than beating them in England. It would be a serious achievement, if not as big as the World Test Championship final. "That will be a very important series to try and prove that,” Conway told stuff.co.nz. However, he said that subcontinent conditions demand batsmen to be mentally ready for the challenges of the longest format while not being in defensive mode with the bat. He said that one should trust their defence and stick to their own methods that work for them to succeed in those conditions. "Travelling to the subcontinent and being presented with surfaces that turn, that's where you've got to be really strong mentally within your defence, trust your defence, and you've got to have a method in which you can score. If you're not looking to score runs you won't be in good positions. You've got to nail down a plan and stick to it as much as possible, even though it's going to be challenging,” Conway added. Conway announced his arrival on the big stage in the Test series against England right before the World Test Championship final against India. He was on the money from the word go and batted with the mind and class of a Test veteran to help the Blackcaps win their first Tests series win in England after 1999. Blackcaps would bank on him to provide an equally good start at the top of the order on the tour of India scheduled after the ICC World Cup, which is at the forefront of Conway’s agenda now. T20Is have been his first introduction to international cricket and Conway is looking forward to his first T20 World Cup scheduled to start this month. Discussing his mindset and batting position, Conway said that he is looking to bat at number four behind Martin Guptill, Tim Seifert, and Kane Williamson, where he would be trying to “manipulate” the field and run hard between wickets to keep the scoreboard going in the middle phase of the game. "We've got Martin Guptill up top and Tim Seifert who's done really well, and you've got the master, Kane Williamson, at three. If I could slot in at four it would be really good for the team's sake, try to manipulate those middle periods against spin and run hard between the wickets,” Conway concluded.

IPL 2021 | Mike Hesson underlines RCB's focus on adaptation to slowness of Sharjah pitch

The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been the team in form in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League and as they are approaching the business end of the tournament, they are focussing more on adaptation and finetuning their execution to rise the ladder upwards. They face their next game against the Punjab Kings, who had handed them a defeat in the first round of clash between the sides, and RCB Coach Mike Hesson is banking on familiarity to deal with the challenges. He said that the RCB players are aware of Punjab’s specific game plan and also pointed out that the pitches at Sharjah have been slower and lower and there will be no improvement and changes in that regard for the next game. He backed his players to be and ready for the challenge that will set up their entry into the next phase of the tournament. “We know their players very well from a tactical point of view and how they look to attack certain types of bowlers, but it is all about executions and it is all about the fact that they are very good. There are some very good players there and they will try to counter-attack and we will try and find a way of dealing with it” Hesson said in RCB’s preview video. “It’s probably equally as important that we adapt to playing at Sharjah. We know the surface and they are not going to get any quicker than they have been. We have got to make sure that we are prepared for that” said Hesson. The RCB are sitting on 14 points from 11 games this season and a win over Punjab will confirm their place in the first four teams on the points table. A win for Punjab, on the other hand, will keep the Kings alive in the tournament and open up many fronts for the likes of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Mumbai Indians, the Rajasthan Royals.

IPL 2021 | RR vs CSK: Hits & Flops as Jaiswal, Dube neutralise Ruturaj masterclass

It was one joyous ride at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi for all the fans of the Indian batting and its future prospects. Three young Indian batters in Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube showcased the depth of the Indian batting talents as they hit world-class bowlers out of the park as if they were playing in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. However, whale Gaikwad’s hundred was brilliance personified, the fifties by Jaiswal and Dube were the need of the hour for Rajasthan Royals who finally got the much-desired win and broke their three-match losing streak. With this enormous victory, where they chased down 190 with 15 balls to spare and seven wickets in hand, the Royals reached 10 pints, equalling three other teams and have thereby kept their hopes of qualifying for the Playoffs alive and kicking. All that they need to do now is win the remaining two games. Batting was definitely the Hit of this game and thus bowlers would have to bear the wrath of being tagged as Flops in the section where both hits and flops are discussed in detail. Hits Ruturaj Gaikwad Even if Chennai lost the game, the innings that Ruturaj Gaikwad played is going to become a part of the folklore called scintillating IPL hundreds and would be told for many seasons to come. His innings, which was played in two phases was a brilliant example of how people can make big runs even without obsessively becoming a great hitter of the ball. The 24-year-old was calm and com[osed when the going was tough at the start of the match, but just as things started to smoothen, he changed his gear and after completing his first fifty runs in 43 balls, he completed the next 51 in just 17 of them. Of the 51 that he made, 46 came in boundaries, indicating very well that if the need is, this mand, who is a phenomenal timer of the ball, can very easily switch gears. The fact that Gaikwad had to wait for 14 balls to take strike after reaching 95 and then reached his hundred with a six made it all the sweeter. And therefore even in a very badly lost game, he was rightfully adjudged Player of the Match. Yashasvi Jaiswal If Gaikwad’s innings was a spectacle to behold, pocket rocket Yashasvi Jaiswal made sure that he featured his name in the list of brilliant fifty scorers on that very same day so that the spotlight is shared. It was his first-ever IPL fifty and what a fifty it was, coming off just 19 balls, the knock included all the shots that feature prominently in the 20-20 playbook. Cut, flick, slog, cover drive, over the covers six, pull, hoik over mid-on, six over fine-leg, there was nothing that Jaiswal left to be desired for the fans watching him. In fact, in one over of Josh Hazlewood, he hit him for 22 runs in just fours balls, hitting three sixes and a four. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration one bit to say that it was Jaiswal and Evin Lewis at the top that made the chase look like a piece of cake for the Royals later on. The duo added 77 in just five overs to make this the biggest powerplay of 2021 IPL. Shivam Dube When Shivam Dube walked in, he took a few balls to settle in and even mishit a few shots on which he was lucky enough they didn’t carry to fielders. Another thing that went in his favour was the introduction of spin from blithe ends which he enjoyed to the core. And just as he found his rhythm, the Mumbai man was unstoppable. He hit both Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali, the top CSK spinners all over the park and then utilised the confidence gained from those hits to tonk the pacers in Shardul Thakur, Curran and KM Asif as well. In total, the 28-year-old who was making a comeback into the side, and playing for the first time in the UAE leg, hit 62 off just 42 balls and remained unbeaten to see his team through. Flops Josh Hazlewood When CSK scored 189, it would have expected its fast bowlers, especially Hazlewood, who is considered one of the most accurate lines and length bowlers in the world, to give them a good start. A start where if the wickets are not coming then at least the flow of runs is checked. Instead, what happened was total brutality against Hazlewood, committed by both the Royals’ openers. The bowler, who ascribed his best IPL figures in just the last game, was hit for 38 in his first two overs and then ended up giving away 54 runs in his four overs without taking even a single wicket and thereby registering his worst IPL figures. Thus IPL showed Hazlewood within two days what great a leveller it is. Sam Curran Sam Curran, who was the lone shining star for CSK in a dismal season last year, has been totally opposite this year, especially in the UAE leg of the tournament. In fact, such has been his form that he has not been able to get in the playing XI as an automatic selection and has played two games as a backup for Dwayne Bravo. In today’s game too, Curran was selected as a replacement for Bravo who was rested to freshen up before the Playoffs. But instead of utilising this opportunity, Curran gave it away pretty easily. The left-hander didn’t get to bat, but in bowling he was horrendous. Bowling waist-high no balls and full toss, not keeping a tight line and getting wayward both with the change of pace as well as his length, the 23-year-old all-rounder was a total mess. In the end, he ended up giving away 55 runs in his four overs without taking any wicket. From here on, while Chennai play Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in its bid to finish in the top two, Rajasthan could look to continue the winning momentum and beat Mumbai Indians whom they face in their next assignment to make their claim to the Playoffs spot stronger.
