I always look to take wickets rather than looking to contain runs: Avesh Khan

Delhi Capitals pacer Avesh Khan who has been one of the leading wicket-takers in this season of the IPL has said that whenever the skipper hands him the ball, he tries to pick wickets rather than looking to contain runs.

"Thanks to Rishabh, he has given me the opportunity to play this season, whenever I bowl, I always look to take wickets rather than looking to contain runs. I was trying to take the wicket of Hardik Pandya, the ball reversed a bit and hence I was able to dismiss him," Avesh told teammate Axar Patel in a video posted on IPLT20.com.

Khan has picked up 21 wickets in 12 matches that he has played so far in the competition and is sitting at the number two position in the wicket-taker’s tally.

Delhi Capitals have already qualified for the playoffs and continued form against Mumbai Indians on Saturday in Sharjah. Riding on some fine piece of bowling from Avesh and Axar Patel, DC first restricted MI to 129/8 in 20 overs and then chased down the target by 4 wickets.

Avesh returned with figures of 3/15 in 4 overs while Axar scalped three wickets at the cost of 21 runs in 4 overs.

IPL 2021 | Mike Hesson underlines RCB's focus on adaptation to slowness of Sharjah pitch

The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been the team in form in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League and as they are approaching the business end of the tournament, they are focussing more on adaptation and finetuning their execution to rise the ladder upwards. They face their next game against the Punjab Kings, who had handed them a defeat in the first round of clash between the sides, and RCB Coach Mike Hesson is banking on familiarity to deal with the challenges. He said that the RCB players are aware of Punjab’s specific game plan and also pointed out that the pitches at Sharjah have been slower and lower and there will be no improvement and changes in that regard for the next game. He backed his players to be and ready for the challenge that will set up their entry into the next phase of the tournament. “We know their players very well from a tactical point of view and how they look to attack certain types of bowlers, but it is all about executions and it is all about the fact that they are very good. There are some very good players there and they will try to counter-attack and we will try and find a way of dealing with it” Hesson said in RCB’s preview video. “It’s probably equally as important that we adapt to playing at Sharjah. We know the surface and they are not going to get any quicker than they have been. We have got to make sure that we are prepared for that” said Hesson. The RCB are sitting on 14 points from 11 games this season and a win over Punjab will confirm their place in the first four teams on the points table. A win for Punjab, on the other hand, will keep the Kings alive in the tournament and open up many fronts for the likes of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Mumbai Indians, the Rajasthan Royals.

IPL 2021 | RR vs CSK: Hits & Flops as Jaiswal, Dube neutralise Ruturaj masterclass

It was one joyous ride at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi for all the fans of the Indian batting and its future prospects. Three young Indian batters in Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube showcased the depth of the Indian batting talents as they hit world-class bowlers out of the park as if they were playing in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. However, whale Gaikwad’s hundred was brilliance personified, the fifties by Jaiswal and Dube were the need of the hour for Rajasthan Royals who finally got the much-desired win and broke their three-match losing streak. With this enormous victory, where they chased down 190 with 15 balls to spare and seven wickets in hand, the Royals reached 10 pints, equalling three other teams and have thereby kept their hopes of qualifying for the Playoffs alive and kicking. All that they need to do now is win the remaining two games. Batting was definitely the Hit of this game and thus bowlers would have to bear the wrath of being tagged as Flops in the section where both hits and flops are discussed in detail. Hits Ruturaj Gaikwad Even if Chennai lost the game, the innings that Ruturaj Gaikwad played is going to become a part of the folklore called scintillating IPL hundreds and would be told for many seasons to come. His innings, which was played in two phases was a brilliant example of how people can make big runs even without obsessively becoming a great hitter of the ball. The 24-year-old was calm and com[osed when the going was tough at the start of the match, but just as things started to smoothen, he changed his gear and after completing his first fifty runs in 43 balls, he completed the next 51 in just 17 of them. Of the 51 that he made, 46 came in boundaries, indicating very well that if the need is, this mand, who is a phenomenal timer of the ball, can very easily switch gears. The fact that Gaikwad had to wait for 14 balls to take strike after reaching 95 and then reached his hundred with a six made it all the sweeter. And therefore even in a very badly lost game, he was rightfully adjudged Player of the Match. Yashasvi Jaiswal If Gaikwad’s innings was a spectacle to behold, pocket rocket Yashasvi Jaiswal made sure that he featured his name in the list of brilliant fifty scorers on that very same day so that the spotlight is shared. It was his first-ever IPL fifty and what a fifty it was, coming off just 19 balls, the knock included all the shots that feature prominently in the 20-20 playbook. Cut, flick, slog, cover drive, over the covers six, pull, hoik over mid-on, six over fine-leg, there was nothing that Jaiswal left to be desired for the fans watching him. In fact, in one over of Josh Hazlewood, he hit him for 22 runs in just fours balls, hitting three sixes and a four. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration one bit to say that it was Jaiswal and Evin Lewis at the top that made the chase look like a piece of cake for the Royals later on. The duo added 77 in just five overs to make this the biggest powerplay of 2021 IPL. Shivam Dube When Shivam Dube walked in, he took a few balls to settle in and even mishit a few shots on which he was lucky enough they didn’t carry to fielders. Another thing that went in his favour was the introduction of spin from blithe ends which he enjoyed to the core. And just as he found his rhythm, the Mumbai man was unstoppable. He hit both Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali, the top CSK spinners all over the park and then utilised the confidence gained from those hits to tonk the pacers in Shardul Thakur, Curran and KM Asif as well. In total, the 28-year-old who was making a comeback into the side, and playing for the first time in the UAE leg, hit 62 off just 42 balls and remained unbeaten to see his team through. Flops Josh Hazlewood When CSK scored 189, it would have expected its fast bowlers, especially Hazlewood, who is considered one of the most accurate lines and length bowlers in the world, to give them a good start. A start where if the wickets are not coming then at least the flow of runs is checked. Instead, what happened was total brutality against Hazlewood, committed by both the Royals’ openers. The bowler, who ascribed his best IPL figures in just the last game, was hit for 38 in his first two overs and then ended up giving away 54 runs in his four overs without taking even a single wicket and thereby registering his worst IPL figures. Thus IPL showed Hazlewood within two days what great a leveller it is. Sam Curran Sam Curran, who was the lone shining star for CSK in a dismal season last year, has been totally opposite this year, especially in the UAE leg of the tournament. In fact, such has been his form that he has not been able to get in the playing XI as an automatic selection and has played two games as a backup for Dwayne Bravo. In today’s game too, Curran was selected as a replacement for Bravo who was rested to freshen up before the Playoffs. But instead of utilising this opportunity, Curran gave it away pretty easily. The left-hander didn’t get to bat, but in bowling he was horrendous. Bowling waist-high no balls and full toss, not keeping a tight line and getting wayward both with the change of pace as well as his length, the 23-year-old all-rounder was a total mess. In the end, he ended up giving away 55 runs in his four overs without taking any wicket. From here on, while Chennai play Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in its bid to finish in the top two, Rajasthan could look to continue the winning momentum and beat Mumbai Indians whom they face in their next assignment to make their claim to the Playoffs spot stronger.

IPL 2021 | RR vs CSK: What Experts Said after Royals unveil 'sensational performance' to stay in the hunt

Rajasthan Royals kept their playoffs hopes alive with a scintillating performance with the bat against Chennai Super Kings in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night. Chasing 190, the Royals went over the line by 7 wickets. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Evin Lewis were off to a brisk start to the chase after the two batters put 77 for the first wicket before Lewis departed for 27 off 12 balls. But Jaiswal was in different form as he struck a half-century in just 19 balls during the course, a knock that included three maximums and 6 fours. He was eventually undone by Asif after getting caught behind by MS Dhoni. But the left-hander’s wicket didn’t really push RR on the backfoot as Shivam Dube and captain Sanju Samson took the onus on themselves and stitched a stand of 89 runs for the third wicket. Dube was in sublime form as he struck four maximums and as many fours to return unbeaten at 64 off 42 during the chase. Samson was eventually sent back in the hut by Shardul Thakur for 28 but that didn’t really have much impact on the scoring-rate and RR went over the line in the 18th over. Earlier, in the day, the Chennai Super Kings batting unit too was on song as Ruturaj Gaikwad unveiled a masterclass with the willow. The right-hander scored his maiden IPL ton while Ravindra Jadeja took on the RR bowling attack in the death overs and an unbeaten 15-ball 32 to help the side put 189/4 on the board. CSK captain MS Dhoni lauded RR batsmen for putting in such kind of an efforts. “You needed to bat well, and they did that, and put pressure on the bowlers. They just took the game away in the first 6 overs. 250 would've been closer to par (Warning: sarcasm), given the way they were going,” he said in the post-match presentation. RR skipper Sanju Samson said that the track had something on offer for the batsmen in the later phase of the game. “We are aware of the abilities of the people we have in our batting line-up. That's why it's disappointing when we lose. The wicket was behaving really well in the last 3-4 overs, so we knew it'd be much better in the second innings. I am happy I guessed it (pitch getting better in the second dig) right,” he said. Experts’ Opinion Commentator Harsha Bhogle lavished praise on the way RR batsmen fared in the match and anchored the side to an important win. “What an astonishing result! And what a sensational performance from Rajasthan Royals. Aaj sachmuch HallaBol,” he tweeted. Former India opener Virender Sehwag lauded Jaiswal and Dube for their batting efforts. “What a run chase by Rajasthan Royals. Yashasvi Jaiswal was top class and clean striking from Shivam Dube. The league is now wide open,” he wrote on Twitter. Former India batsman Aakash Chopra went on to suggest that both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jaiswal should be adjudged man of the match. “Can we pick both Ruturaj and Yashasvi as Players Of The Match today? Make an exception. Indian Pratibha League after all,” he tweeted. Journalist Ayaz Memon was all in praise for Dube and Jaiswal after the two left-handers toyed with CSK bowling. “Stupefying run chase by Rajasthan Royals against table toppers CSK. Jaiswal and Dube toyed with the bowling. Shows the talent they possess but also highlights their inconsistency. But this upset result makes competition for 2 places in the play offs stiffer,” he wrote on Twitter. CSK will now lock horns with DC in Dubai on Monday while RR will be up against MI in Sharjah on Tuesday.

RR vs CSK | Ruturaj Gaikwad reaches maiden IPL hundred with a six off the last ball

On Saturday, 2 October, when Ruturaj Gaikwad entered the nervous nineties against Rajasthan Royals, there were still more than 12 balls left and his hundred looked like a certainty. But what happened after that was just mayhem, Ravindra Jadeja, who was batting on the other end, took strike on 14 of the 16 balls that were left to be bowled. But the man of the moment, Gaikwad got the strike just at the right moment when two balls were left and he needed five runs to get to his hundred. But when a slow ball bouncer was declared not wide, the target was clear, one ball and a six for Gaikwad to get to his first hundred, and what did the Punekar do? He pulled a back of the length delivery to a long 108 meters six in the banks of the Shiekh Zayed Stadium to give the air probably its biggest punch and celebrate one of the best innings ever played in IPL history. It was also a fitting end to what was a spectacle by Gaikwad. It has to be stressed upon that Ruturaj has scored 312 runs from his last five appearances at a massive average of 104 runs per innings. He currently holds the Orange Cap in this edition as well with 508 runs to his name from 12 innings. The 24-year-old, who reached his fifty in 43 balls and was sluggish at the start (which has kind of become his mojo), but what happened in the next 17 balls, was just mind-blowing. Of the five sixes, he hit all of them after passing the fifty runs landmark and out of the nine fours, four came after fifty as well, meaning that he scored 46 of his last 51 runs in boundaries. Thanks to the hundred by Ruturaj, who is now also the Orange Cap holder with 508 runs in just 12 innings, the Super Kings reached 189-4 in their 20 overs.
