IPL 2021 | Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians: What Experts said as Punjab return to winning ways

Punjab Kings stormed their way back into the 14th edition of IPL after thrashing defending champions Mumbai Indians by 9 wickets in the 17th match of the competition. A thoroughly professional performance by KL Rahul and co. ensured that the target of 132 was chased down with more than two overs left. Captain Rahul batted through the innings and helped Punjab Kings chase the target down chipping in with crucial partnerships with opening partner Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle.

A target of 132 could have become tricky had Punjab lost early wickets but both Rahul and Agarwal ensured that an opening partnership of 53 runs set the tone for the run-chase. Agarwal looked in his prolific best while Rahul was more of an accumulator as he has been in the last two years. Rahul Chahar who has been the lynchpin of the MI bowling attack in the tournament so far did his reputation no harm when he bagged the wicket of Mayank Agarwal by enticing him to a false shot down long-on.

Some brilliant bowling by Rahul Chahar and Jayant Yadav in the middle overs put some pressure on Rahul and Gayle. While both ticked along the scorers, the required run rate slowly crept up. Required rate of 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium at any point of the run-chase is not easy and it could have become difficult for Punjab.

However, Gayle took Jayant Yadav to the cleaners in a span of two overs which got Punjab within touching distance of the victory target. Trent Boult’s 18th over proved to be the final nail in the coffin as he was smashed for 17 runs in 4 balls as Punjab won the match with 14 deliveries left. Rahul Chahar was the pick of the bowlers while Jayant Yadav also chipped in with a useful spell.

It was Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul who won the toss and opted to field. Mumbai Indians played with a different approach right from the word go. Analysing the situation they thought biding by their time in the powerplay which worked wonders for the Punjab Kings. Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan’s dismissal brought in Suryakumar Yadav to the crease. Why SKY was not sent at No 3 which has the position where he has churned out runs for fun only the team management knows.

It was Rohit Sharma who stitched together a valuable partnership of 79 runs which laid the foundation for a 150+ score but quick wickets of both the batsmen never allowed guys like Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya to press on the accelerator. Some fantastic death bowling by Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami didn’t allow MI to get anywhere close to the 150-mark. Eventually, a target of 132 proved to be a cakewalk for the Punjab Kings.

Captain’s Viewpoints

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma lamented the fact they didn’t put up enough runs on the board but lauded Punjab Kings for chasing the target down with more than two overs to spare. He further added that a score of 150 160 always keeps you in the game but a score of 131 is never enough. Despite trying so hard, the pitch wasn’t easy for stroke-making and the MI top-order barring Rohit Sharma never looked comfortable.

“Not enough runs, exactly. I still feel it's not a bad wicket to bat on. You can see how Kings won with nine wickets in hand. If you get 150-160 you're always in the game and that is something we've failed in the last two games, we need to look at that. We can look at it either way - their bowlers bowled very well in that powerplay. Ishan was tyring to hit but couldn't get it, even myself. We were trying but the wicket wasn’t easy,” Rohit Sharma said.

Mumbai Indians have batted well in the powerplay in the tournament but today that wasn’t the case. They never really got going and lost the wickets of Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan. He backed the decision to send in Ishan Kishan ahead of Suryakumar Yadav saying it was a tactical thing. He also added that the decision was taken by the entire team management.

“In the last four games we really batted well in the powerplay but today we failed to do so. We're missing batting all 20 overs the way we want to. Something we need to look at. Ishan at 3 was just a tactical thing, we wanted someone to bat in the middle who plays well against spin and we identified Surya as that player." Rohit added.

"When it works it looks good, when it doesn't it looks bad. There's no one person who makes a decision, it's the entire unit. We just need to understand how you need to bat and bowl when the conditions are tough,” Rohit Sharma said.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul lauded the young team for a resounding victory with their back being against the wall. He further added that they have always added new names every year and this year guys like Shahrukh Khan, Deepak Hooda and today Ravi Bishnoi is utilising the chances to the fullest.

“We don't wanna get too ahead of ourselves, we're slowly coming together as a team. I said this after the first game as well, we're a young team. We add new names every year and we've to be patient. Hooda has been playing really well, Shahrukh's taken his opportunities, and Bishnoi today,” Rahul said.

Meanwhile, Rahul felt that the pitch was a sticky one and had a chat with the head coach before choosing to chase. He also opined that the bowlers needed to bowl in favourable conditions which was the case when Punjab was bowling. Mumbai Indians middle order never looked comfortable and was pushed to the backfoot by the Punjab bowlers.

“Me and coach did have a long chat about batting second, I felt that the wicket was sticky and the first few games we've batted and felt that the bowlers were always under pressure. I felt it was important that bowlers get to bowl in those conditions and we heard that there was a lot of dew. So I felt like it can ease up and come on better - that didn't happen, but we knew what to chase and that helped,” Rahul said.

"The dry ball did play a big part, it just started ripping. When that happens it gets really hard to even get singles. But it was good of Chris, he figured out who to target, that's the benefit of having someone like him. Ravi's been working real hard with Anil bhai, there were a few things he had to correct, and he's worked really hard and he's held his composure against a solid batting line-up,” Rahul added.

Experts’ Opinion

One of the renowned voices of cricket, Harsha Bhogle lauded Kl Rahul and Chris Gayle for a wonderful partnership. He felt that Rahul played perfectly today and according to the situation and the innings from Gayle was a bit of a gem which didn’t allow MI to claw their way back into the game.

He also felt that Hardik Pandya not bowling is making things difficult for the defending champions. Harsha is of the opinion that MI have to change their tactics if Hardik is playing in the XI as a pure batsman. There was also an incident of possible Mankading and in reference to that context, Bhogle said people should now stop terming that as “Mankad” and call that a perfectly legitimate run-out.

Meanwhile, the Cricviz Analyst like each match day gave out some interesting stats about the game. Before the game, Punjab Kings had a very lesser percentage of chances of winning. However, they have set their record straight with a resounding victory by 9 wickets.

Popular journalist Vikrant Gupta criticised the Mumbai Indians by saying that one cannot hope to win big matches with four to five batsmen woefully out of touch. He also mentioned the fact that MI’s highest score in the last 5 matches has been 158.

Meanwhile, Boria Majumdar congratulated the Punjab Kings for controlling the run-chase pretty well. He also lamented the fact that MI’s batting has been sub-par in the tournament so far but it can happen. He also commented that how spinners like Rahul Chahar and Jayant Yadav will be important for Mumbai’s chances in the match when KL Rahul and Chris Gayle started the partnership.

Ayaz Menon believes that the Punjab Kings victory has opened up the tournament quite a bit given Punjab had lost their last three matches. He lauded Ravi Bishnoi for bowling a brilliant spell and those two wickets proved to be crucial. Just like Harsha Bhogle he also asked MI to ponder upon the changes especially when Hardik Pandya is not bowling.

While this victory will be a huge confidence booster for the Punjab Kings, the defending champions need to sort out their problems. They are a world-class outfit with several big names in their ranks but the game is not played on paper and that is where the defending champions have been found out in the tournament so far.

KL Rahul will finally breathe a sigh of relief after managing to carry his bat through the run-chase. His strike rate has been questioned quite often and he needs to get certain things right before Punjab Kings can become a substantial contender for the playoffs spot.

Non-WTC Full Members & Associates might feature in more Tests in next calendar

The Full Members outside the World Test Championship (WTC) and Associates might have a structure for more Test cricket in next cricket calendar according to a report in the ESPNCricinfo. According to some sources, teams like Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe who are the Full members but are not part of the WTC while Associates with ODI status like Scotland, Netherlands and some others can be involved. "I know it's been mooted," an Associate administrator told ESPNcricinfo. "I think every nation and every governing body is trying to find ways to make the game better. We're here to deliver cricket and improve the standards of cricket globally." The Test commitments for the three members who are not a part of WTC is one of the major issues that needs to be resolved in the next calendar year. The three nations have only played ten Tests among themselves since the beginning of the WTC in 2019.Though they have a busier Test calendar during the second cycle of WTC, it is not by much. “What does it look like? Where would we want more cricket?,” said one administrator. “Would it achieve our ambitions? There’s a lot of things in the mix before you actually commit and dig deep into it. If it was kicking around, we’d certainly want to be in the conversation.” There has not been any Muti-day international cricket since the last edition of the Intercontinental Cup concluded in December 2017 for the three the non-WTC trio and the Associate members. Subsequently financial issues will be the biggest hurdle if such structure comes up. “It was a finance-driven issue,” said the administrator. “It was about affordability. Again, what does a new tournament look like? What is the cost of running it? You have to be able to fund it to do it properly. So until any detail is produced, you can’t make any informed decisions.”

I was heartbroken: Andre Russell on his dismissal against CSK

Kolkata Knight Riders were reeling at 31/5 while chasing a mammoth 221 in 20 overs against Chennai Super Kings in their encounter in the IPL 2021 at the Wankhede Stadium. But what unleashed next was sheer masterclass from one of the finest strikers of the ball in world cricket, Andre Russell. The right-handed batsman took the charge in his hands and began to hammer the CSK bowlers all around the park. He scored a 22-ball 54 that included six sixes and just three boundaries. Russell was looking in great touch and set for a big score but a misjudgement of line and length from the West Indies all-rounder cost him his wicket. Sam Curran cleaned him up with a length ball which Russell thought would go for a wide down the leg side but instead the ball rattled the woodwork behind him. In the post-match presentation, captain Eoin Morgan said that he tends to stay away from Russell after he gets out to which the Caribbean batsman responded that he was very disappointed with that kind of dismissal. “Well, when you get out, and you know the job is not done, you tend to be angry and the HULK can come out. Last night was different. I was very emotional and disappointed. I wanted to take it home so badly. I was heartbroken,” Russell said. Apart from Russell, Dinesh Karthik and Pat Cummins also took on the CSK bowlers. Karthik scored a quick-fire 40 off 24 but Cummins caused the onslaught in the later part of the innings. The right-hander struck 66 runs off 34 deliveries that involved six maximums and four boundaries. KKR though fell short of the target and lost the match by 18 runs eventually.

ECB to stick with 'wickets' for dismissals during 'The Hundred'

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had earlier decided to replace the terminology ‘wickets’ with ‘outs’ for the tournament The Hundred. But now according to the London Evening Standard, the term ‘wickets’ will remain as is for the tournament. The decision has been taken to maintain the consistency with the other shorter and long format of the game. The ECB had proposed to tweak some terminologies like ‘batters’ replacing ‘batsmen’ for the tournament. But they received some criticism from the fans who slammed the ‘Americanised’ words. The board also received some criticism from the former players like Michael Vaughan, Brad Hogg. The former England captain had said that he does like the changes in cricket but calling ‘outs’ for wickets looks more gimmicky. ‘I like change in cricket but saying ‘outs’ instead of wickets makes The Hundred look even more gimmicky than it already is. I can understand batsmen changing to batters in this era but I don’t really get wickets to outs. That just looks like change for change’s sake. My only worry is, what next? Will cow corner be banned so as not to upset vegans?’ Vaughan had said earlier. Former Australia spinner Hogg suggested that calling ‘wickets’ as ‘outs’ is a “little more too much”. ‘The Hundred changing ‘wickets’ to ‘outs’ for dismissals is a little too much. Cricket is not baseball. It’s enough the changes in formats to tamper with the terminology!’, Hogg had tweeted. The ECB has collaborated with Jax Jones to produce a song called ‘Feels’ for the tournament.

IPL 2021 | RR vs KKR: Depleted Rajasthan and Kolkata try to revive fortunes

It will be a battle between two strugglers in Vivo IPL 2021 so far when the Kolkata Knight Riders lock horns against a depleted Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the 18th match of the tournament. Both teams haven’t managed to tick most of the boxes required to win in big tournaments and have been found out. Kolkata Knight Riders started off their campaign with a resounding victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad but couldn’t quite build on the good start. They lost against the Mumbai Indians from a winning position and nothing seemed to go right from there on. The last two matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings were dominated by the batsmen. The KKR bowlers were found out infront of a sensational onslaught from ABD and Maxwell against RCB and Du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad against the CSK. Even the captaincy standards from the world-class Eoin Morgan has lacked that bite on occasions. The top order has looked in good touch but barring Nitish Rana none has gone onto score consistently. Shubman Gill has looked good in patches but hasn’t managed to covert his starts. Rahul Tripathi started off the tournament well but has lacked the consistency. In the match against CSK it was a late surge from Andre Russell and Pat Cummins to get them that close. They had no right to reach over 200 after being reduced to 31/5 but some sublime hitting ensured KKR reached so close to the target. On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals have gone from bad to worse. Nothing has worked in their favour and barring a victory against the Delhi Capitals, they have been pretty ordinary in almost all the matches. Sanju Samson showed his class against the Punjab Kings and almost helped them chase down a mammoth target but since then he has not produced any score of substance. The lack of consistency has been a concern with Samson and that seemed to be haunting him even this season. Million dollar baby Chris Morris has been good in patches and helped them win against the Capitals with some whirlwind strokeplay. However he hasn’t been the best with the ball. In the absence of Jofra Archer, he need to take more responsibility if Rajasthan hopes of turning their fortunes around. Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders; Match Details Match Number- 18 Date and Time: April 24, 2021, 07:30 pm IST, 02:00 pm GMT Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Broadcast and Live Stream: Star Sports and Hotstar Pitch Report Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is always known to produce batting paradises and it has been no different in this season so far. Barring one or two matches here and there, most of the matches have been high scoring and full of thrill. More than 400 runs were scored in the match between CSK and KKR. There has been turn on offer for bowlers and if you can pitch in the right areas, there is something for the bowlers as well. However the high scoring pattern should continue even tomorrow. Weather and Toss The weather in Mumbai is expected to be in the early 30 degrees. It has been pretty good conditions for cricket in Mumbai so far. Maximum temperature will be 33 while 28 is the minimum expected for tomorrow. The team winning the toss should’t have any hesitations chasing because this has been the trend at the Wankhede over the years. Team News Rajasthan Royals Royals is the weakest team on paper at the moment given how they have played over the years. They are missing the services of their two biggest players Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. With Archer being ruled out of the entirety of the IPL, the local guys and the other established players has to put their hands up and deliver for the team. Shreyas Gopal who was included in the previous game was totally based on his record against Kohli and ABD. The pitch was not suited to spinners and with Gopal, not in good form coming into the match, this was a desperate call from Rajasthan. They have to keep faith in their players. However, I feel it’s time Manan Vohra makes way for an elegant Yashasvi Jaiswal who didn’t get enough opportunities last year. Strongest XI Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Shivam Dube, David Miller, Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia, Chris Morris, Shreyas Gopal, Chetan Sakariya, Mustafizur Rahman Kolkata Knight Riders Now, what does KKR need to do to get their campaign back on track? A change in approach? Their approach hasn’t been that bad but their execution hasn’t been there. It’s always a tall task chasing over 200 in a T20 whichever stadium one might be playing at. For now I don’t find any changes in the team. Sunil Narine who returned to the team in the previous match could be given a chance to open. The bowling department looks settled and Kamlesh Nagarkoti who played the last match against the CSK should look to get some match time and have some wickets in his belt. Varun Chakravarthy will look to continue the good work while Pat Cummins has given them a solid option at the backend with his breezy knock against the Super Kings.
