IPL 2021 | RR vs KKR: Depleted Rajasthan and Kolkata try to revive fortunes

It will be a battle between two strugglers in Vivo IPL 2021 so far when the Kolkata Knight Riders lock horns with a depleted Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the 18th match of the tournament. Both teams haven’t managed to tick most of the boxes required to win in big tournaments and have been found out.

Kolkata Knight Riders started off their campaign with a resounding victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad but couldn’t quite build on the good start. They lost against the Mumbai Indians from a winning position and nothing seemed to go right from thereon.

The last two matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings were dominated by the batsmen. The KKR bowlers were found out in front of a sensational onslaught from ABD and Maxwell against RCB and Du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad against the CSK. Even the captaincy standards from the world-class Eoin Morgan has lacked that bite on occasions.

The top order has looked in good touch but barring Nitish Rana none has gone onto score consistently. Shubman Gill has looked good in patches but hasn’t managed to convert his starts. Rahul Tripathi started off the tournament well but has lacked consistency.

In the match against CSK, it was a late surge from Andre Russell and Pat Cummins to get them that close. They had no right to reach over 200 after being reduced to 31/5 but some sublime hitting ensured KKR reached so close to the target.

On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals have gone from bad to worse. Nothing has worked in their favour and barring a victory against the Delhi Capitals, they have been pretty ordinary in almost all the matches. Sanju Samson showed his class against the Punjab Kings and almost helped them chase down a mammoth target but since then he has not produced any score of substance. The lack of consistency has been a concern with Samson and that seemed to be haunting him even this season.

Million-dollar baby Chris Morris has been good in patches and helped them win against the Capitals with some whirlwind strokeplay. However, he hasn’t been the best with the ball. In the absence of Jofra Archer, he need to take more responsibility if Rajasthan hopes of turning their fortunes around.

Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders; Match Details

Match Number- 18

Date and Time: April 24, 2021, 07:30 pm IST, 02:00 pm IST

Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Broadcast and Live Stream: Star Sports and Hotstar

Pitch Report

Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is always known to produce batting paradises and it has been no different in this season so far. Barring one or two matches here and there, most of the matches have been high scoring and full of thrill. More than 400 runs were scored in the match between CSK and KKR.

There has been turn on offer for bowlers and if you can pitch in the right areas, there is something for the bowlers as well. However the high scoring pattern should continue even tomorrow.

Weather and Toss

The weather in Mumbai is expected to be in the early 30 degrees. It has been pretty good conditions for cricket in Mumbai so far. Maximum temperature will be 33 while 28 is the minimum expected for tomorrow. The team winning the toss should’t have any hesitations chasing because this has been the trend at the Wankhede over the years.

Team News

Rajasthan Royals

Royals is the weakest team on paper at the moment given how they have played over the years. They are missing the services of their two biggest players Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. With Archer being ruled out of the entirety of the IPL, the local guys and the other established players has to put their hands up and deliver for the team.

Shreyas Gopal who was included in the previous game was totally based on his record against Kohli and ABD. The pitch was not suited to spinners and with Gopal, not in good form coming into the match, this was a desperate call from Rajasthan. They have to keep faith in their players. However, I feel it’s time Manan Vohra makes way for an elegant Yashasvi Jaiswal who didn’t get enough opportunities last year.

Strongest XI

Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Shivam Dube, David Miller, Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia, Chris Morris, Shreyas Gopal, Chetan Sakariya, Mustafizur Rahman

Kolkata Knight Riders

Now, what does KKR need to do to get their campaign back on track? A change in approach? Their approach hasn’t been that bad but their execution hasn’t been there. It’s always a tall task chasing over 200 in a T20 whichever stadium one might be playing at. For now I don’t find any changes in the team. Sunil Narine who returned to the team in the previous match could be given a chance to open.

The bowling department looks settled and Kamlesh Nagarkoti who played the last match against the CSK should look to get some match time and have some wickets in his belt. Varun Chakravarthy will look to continue the good work while Pat Cummins has given them a solid option at the backend with his breezy knock against the Super Kings.

Probable XI: Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Varun Chakravarthy, Prasidh Krishna

Dream11 Predictions/ Fantasy suggestions

Wicket-keeper- Jos Buttler, Dinesh Karthik

Batsmen-David Miller, Shubman Gill, Riyam Parag

All-rounders- Andre Russell, Chris Morris, Sunil Narine

SL vs BAN: Groundsman at Pallekele tests positive for COVID-19

A groundsman at the Pallekele stadium in Sri Lanka has tested positive for COVID-19. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are playing the first Test match at the same venue. The groundsman along with nine other individuals who have come in contact with him have been put in the isolation. "A temporary worker, who reported to work, was found positive during regular testings we do before they enter the venue. Once he was found positive, he along with nine of his first contacts were sent to follow regular health protocols,'' Prasanna Rodrigo, media manager of SLC, confirmed to Cricbuzz. The series between the two sides was scheduled to take place in July last year but was postponed due to pandemic. It was then re-scheduled in October-November but it didn’t go forward as the Bangladesh side was not ready too comply the 14-day quarantine regulation in the island country. The first Test between the two teams began on Wednesday. Bangladesh after batting first, compiled a massive score of 541/7 (D), courtesy some fine batting from Tamim Iqbal, Najmul Hossain and captain Mominul Haque. While Hossain and Haque notched up individual tons, Tamim scored 90 runs in the first innings. Apart from these three batsmen, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das also chipped in with individual fifties. Vishwa Fernando picked up four wickets in the first innings for the home side. Later, the hosts had a decent start to the pursuit as they ended the third day’s proceedings at 229/3. Dimuth Karunaratne was unbeaten at 85 while Lahiru Thirimane had scored a half-century before getting out. The second match is also scheduled to take place at the same venue from April 29.

Jofra Archer to miss whole of IPL 2021

Rajasthan Royals and England pacer Jofra Archer will miss the whole of the on-going Indian Premier League, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Friday. The right-arm fast bowler underwent a surgery on his middle finger. A statement released by the ECB said that the quick bowler will be in full training with Sussex. "Archer will now step up his training regime starting next week and will be in full training with Sussex. It is expected that he will return to cricket in the next fortnight if he can continue to bowl and prepare pain-free," the release said. If Jofra had to take part in the IPL then he had to go under a mandatory eight-day quarantine which would have interrupted his preparations. The decision of him missing this edition of the IPL has been taken by both RR and Archer mutually. Jofra was one of the most successful bowlers in the IPL last season after he picked up a total of 20 wickets in 14 matches at a healthy economy of 6.55. The RR are already missing the services of Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone. Stokes returned back to the UK after sustaining an injury in his finger while Livingstone flew back home due to bio-bubble fatigue. The franchise though is likely to sign South Africa batsman Rassie van der Dussen who has been among runs for quite some time now. But he has to pass a fitness test to confirm his availability. The Sanju Samson-led side is already in a spot of bother after losing three of the four matches that they have played so far and are at the bottom of the points table. The Royals suffered a defeat against RCB on Thursday after Virat Kohli’s side thumped them by 10 wickets while chasing 178 in 20 overs in Mumbai. Opener Devdutt Padikkal notched up his maiden IPL ton while captain Kohli scored a fifty during the course. RR are now slated to play Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday in Mumbai.

Zimbabwe stun Pakistan with 19-run win to level series

Zimbabwe stunned Pakistan with a 19-run win over the Babar Azam-led side in Harare in the second T20I of the series on Friday. Chasing a small target of 119 runs in 20 overs, the visitors were bundled out for 99 in the 20th over. Luke Jongwe bagged a four-wicket haul which included the dismissals of captain Babar, in-form wicket-keeper batsmanMohammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf and Arshad Iqbal. While Jongwe picked up four, Ryan Burl scalped a couple of wickets during the course. Pakistan looked steady in the chase despite being 56/3 in the 12th over but the departure of Babar Azam saw a flurry of wickets in quick succession. From 78/4, the visiting side just scored 21 runs and lost the next six wickets to suffer the defeat. Only three players managed to get into the double figures while Babar top-scored with 41 off 45 while Danish Aziz who was runout notched up 22 off 24. Earlier, Pakistan bowlers dominated the hosts thoroughly. Though, the home side started off the proceedings in a steady manner but they lost the way in the middle overs and were reduced to 83/5 only to get restricted to 118/9 in 20 overs. Mohammad Hasnain and Aziz picked up two wickets apiece while Faheem Ahsraf, Arshad Iqbal, Haris Rauf and Unman Qadir had one wicket each to their name. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe top-scored for Zimbabwe with 34 in 40 deliveries. Expressing his disappointment on the defeat, Pakistan captain Babar Azam admitted that the team played poor cricket while praising the Zimbabwean bowling attack for their efforts. “We played poor cricket in the batting department. Credit to Zimbabwe for playing good cricket. The surface was stopping a bit and was two-paced. But it's no excuse, we're professionals and need to deal with it. Hopefully we will come back strong in the next game,” Azam said. Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor hailed the youngsters and credited them for executing the plans well. “Big turnaround from the first game and that's all that you can ask of your players. They executed the plans superbly. I'd be lying if I say that I was confident (of defending 118) but we dug deep in the powerplay,” Taylor said. The three-match T20I series is presently levelled at 1-1 with the decider to take place on Sunday in Harare. The T20I series will be followed by a two-match Test series slated to begin on April 29.
