IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians players and support staffs share their views on IPL returning to India

The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League returned to India after the previous edition being held in UAE. Despite the whole tournament being played behind closed doors, the feeling of returning to India and playing the cash-rich league is quite surreal, especially for the local players.

Mumbai Indians who started off their campaign with a defeat at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bangalore will look to get their act right in their coming games. Mumbai Indians haven’t won any of their opening games in the IPL since 2012 and they continued their trend in the opening match of the 14th season.

During a recent video posted by the Mumbai Indians on their Twitter handle, the players and the support staffs can be seen giving their views on the tournament returning to where it belongs.

Former Indian pacer and currently the Director of Cricket Operations in the Mumbai Indians, Zaheer Khan said that it is always a special moment to play the extravaganza in India. All the editions of the tournament have been held in India barring the 2009 edition which was shifted to South Africa. Meanwhile, the first phase of the 2015 edition was also held in UAE.

“ All the fans will be very excited that the IPL has come back to India,” Zaheer said during the video. Meanwhile wicket-keeper batsman Aditya Tare added that the players were lucky that IPL was held in UAE last year very successfully and to top it off Mumbai Indians bagged their 5th IPL title.

Meanwhile captain Rohit Sharma also expressed his excitement with the IPL being back in India. Fast bowling coach Shane Bond also gave his opinion on the fact that how it is different for the Indian players to be back in their own den and despite not having home advantage as such, it feels that the players are back in their own territory.

Jason Roy set to miss atleast two opening matches for SRH

England and Sunrisers Hyderabad new recruit Jason Roy will miss the first two matches for the franchise. Roy who landed in India on April 10 will have to serve a mandatory seven-day quarantine. SRH will play a couple of games during this period, the first against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11 in Chennai and then against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 14 at the same venue. The right-handed batsman might be eligible for the match against MI that is scheduled to take place on April 17 in Chennai as well. The England batsman was a part of the Gujarat Lions (2017) and Delhi Capitals (2018) while opted out of the 2020 edition’s IPL due to personal reasons. The right-handed batsman has played 8 matches scoring 179 runs during the course. Sunrisers Hyderabad had acquired Roy at his base price of INR 2 Crore. The Englishman replaced Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh in the squad who had earlier opted out of the tournament. Roy was among some runs in the recently-concluded T20I series against India where he notched up 144 runs in 5 matches. SRH begin their IPL 2021 campaign against KKR on Sunday in Chennai. Playing for India has added to my confidence: Prasidh Krishna

Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Prasidh Krishna recently made his debut for India during the series against England at home. The right-arm fast bowler became the first Indian to pick up four wickets on his ODI debut. The right-arm quick bowler in an interaction with the KKR’s official website explained how playing for the country has added to his confidence. “It's been a great experience to have made my debut for India. It's a dream come true for any cricketer. In terms of the praise I have been getting, it only adds to my confidence levels and I look forward to taking it ahead from here," he said. Krishna further told that being in the Indian dressing room has helped him add up more skills to his armour. “Every single game that I was a part of, I tried to be at my best. There was no specific variation that I had been working on, but I did learn some important lessons while playing for Team India,” he said. The pacer said that skipper Virat Kohli and other senior members calmed him down during the pressure situation and it helped him eventually. “At the beginning of the match where I made my debut, there was a bit of pressure. But Virat and the other seniors told me to always be on the front foot, and it worked well,” he said. The Kolkata franchise begins their IPL 2021 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Sunday. KKR have lifted the trophy twice in the earlier editions under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.

Venkatesh Prasad shares his own 'Indiranagar ka Gunda' moment on Twitter

The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League began with a bang with Royal Challengers Bangalore starting off with a last-ball victory against the defending champions Mumbai Indians. However, what created more hype than the RCB-MI encounter was a TV commercial featuring Rahul Dravid. Dravid who is regarded as a calm and a composed character who hardly loses his cool is seen losing his temper during a road rage. He is animated as is also seen breaking a car’s mirror in anger. Twitterati lauded his acting skills after seeing a different avatar of Dravid. Regarded as one of the greatest batsmen India has ever seen, Dravid formed the core of the Indian batting line-up ever since making his Test debut back in 1996. All through his career, we have hardly seen Dravid lose his temper and the closest he came to losing his anger was during an MI-RR clash where Dravid was mentoring the Rajasthan Royals. After Aditya Tare hit that famous six and went off in a celebratory run, Dravid threw his cap away in disgust. Dravid’s Karnataka and Indian teammate Venkatesh Prasad reacted to Dravid’s video and shared his own version of ‘Indiranagar Ka Gunda’ moment, the phrase which went viral after Dravid was seen saying this in the commercial. Prasad shared a collage of his famous dismissal of Pakistan batsman Aamer Sohail during the quarter-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup back in 1996. Sohail was batting brilliantly and had just smashed Prasad for a boundary. He looked animated and pointed his fingers towards the cover boundary as if to say “ I am also going to hit the next one there, fetch it if you can”. What transpired in the next delivery is etched in the Indian-Pakistan cricketing folklores. Sohail had a brain fade moment and went for a mighty heave down the leg side which turned out to be an awful shot from Aamer. Prasad bowled the right area and the stumps went for a cartwheel. A famous send-off followed and that wicket set the tone for a famous Indian victory. Referring to his Indiranagar ka Gunda wala moment, Prasad tweeted, "Me to Aamir Sohail in Bangalore at 14.5 - #IndiraNagarkaGunda hoon main," the 14.5 referring to the 15th over of Pakistan's innings.

Jack Edwards, Sean Abbott anchor NSW to One-Day title

New South Wales lifted the Australia domestic One-Day Cup after beating Western Australia in the final by 102 runs in Sydney on Sunday. Chasing 252 in 50 overs, the Western Australian side were bundled out for 149 runs after Sean Abbott returned with a four-for while Nathan Lyon picked up a three-wicket haul. Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc also bagged a couple of wickets during the course. The Mitchell Marsh-led side didn’t start off the proceedings well and lost some early wickets to be left tottering at 85/4 before getting bowled out for 149. Cameron Green top-scored with 36 for WA. Earlier, riding on a ton from Jack Edwards and a half-century from Daniel Hughes, the NSW team managed to score 251/8 in 50 overs. NSW began the innings well after Hughes and Matthew Gikes stitched a stand of 43 runs for the first wicket. But they soon lost a few wickets in quick succession to get reduced to 50/3 before Hughes joined hands with Edwards and the two steadied the ship for the side. Both the players put up a partnership of 118 runs for the fourth wicket before Hughes departed for 58. Edwards though went on to notch up a century after he scored 108. Jason Behrendorff was the pick of the bowlers for WA after he picked up three wickets for 46 runs in 10 overs. Edwards talked about his performance after the match and said that he was pretty relaxed while coming out to bat despite the side was in some spot of bother. "I had a feeling I was going to be playing with the Aussie guys away," said Edwards. "It was probably a little bit of a blessing that I hadn't played too many games (this season) because I just felt like I was coming out and just batting. I felt pretty relaxed out there,” he added. "I'm still reasonably inexperienced at this level so just getting to play was great. Even with those games I wasn’t playing, I was around the group and watching how they went about setting up an innings,” he said.
