IPL 2021 Final | Twitter reactions as CSK lift fourth title after demolishing KKR

Chennai Super Kings were crowned the Indian Premier League champions for the fourth time after they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in the final by 27 runs in Dubai on Friday night.

Chasing a stiff target of 193 runs, the Knight Riders were off to a decent start after openers Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer chipped in with a stand of 91 runs for the first wicket. Iyer eventually departed for a 32-ball 50 after getting caught by Ravindra Jadeja off Shardul Thakur.

Later, Gill also notched up his fifty but Iyer’s scalp broke the shackles and KKR began to lose wickets at quick intervals and were reduced to 125/8 in the 17th over.

Shivam Mavi and Lockie Ferguson then stitched a partnership of 39 runs for the ninth wicket but their efforts weren’t enough to take the side over the line. The Kolkata side were restricted to 165/9 in 20 overs.

Earlier, in the day, the opening stand of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis once again dominated the bowlers and put up 61 runs for the first wicket. While Gaikwad was sent back in the hut for 32, du Plessis continued with his onslaught right till the end and scored 86 off 59 balls.

Robin Uthappa who had come in at number three also played a crucial role in helping CSK put up a big total after he struck a quick-fire 31 off 15 while Moeen Ali was also among runs at a crucial junction in the tournament. The left-handed batsman remained unbeaten at 37 off 20 deliveries as CSK posted 192/3 in 20 overs.

It was surely a perfect comeback from the Super Kings especially after the way they had fared in the last edition of the cash-rich league where the MS Dhoni-led side didn’t manage to make a place for themselves in the playoffs.

IPL 2021 Final | Du Plessis delight with bat, Kolkata’s middle-overs collapse ensures 4th title for CSK

It was a delightful ending for the Chennai Super Kings’ comeback trail as they made comeback in the very last game itself and after staring down at a tough fight with Kolkata at one point being 91-0 in the first 10 overs, chasing 193. In the end, even a 39 run partnership off just 20 balls between Shivam Mavi and Lockie Ferguson for the ninth wicket was not enough to cause any harm whatsoever for the yellow army which eventually on the game by a huge margin of 27 runs to lift its fourth title in ninth final appearance. Venkatesh Iyer. the find of the UAE leg for KKR and for the entire IPL hit a brilliant fifty but wasn’t able to continue and after his wicket, which broke the 91 run partnership for the opening stand, there was a flurry of wickets and the purple brigade went from 91-0 to 125-8, losing eight wickets for just 34 runs and in 35 balls. The wickets were shared between Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja and Josh Hazlewood. The entire middle order of KKR disappointed with the bat with none among Karthik, Morgan, Shakib and Nitish Rana getting into double figures, while Rahul Tripathi, who was injured fielding, had to come to bat. He too couldn’t do anything much and got out for only two off three balls. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss, KKR skipper Eoin morgan asked CSK to bat first. After wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik dropped a tough chance of Faf du Plessis in the third over, bowled by Shakib Al Hasan, the Proteas made full use of it and scored a brilliant 86 off just 59 balls to push Chennai past 190. Useful contributions also came from Ruturaj Gaikwad (32 off 27), Robin Uthappa (31 off 15) and Moeen Ali (37* off 20).
