IPL 2020| SRH vs CSK: What Experts said as a remodelled Chennai take vital two points off a hapless Hyderabad

For the first time in the entire season, Chennai Super Kings played a game for what they have been known for years, ‘intent’. Yes, that was the word of the match as the Yellow Army defeated the Orange Brigade of David Warner by 20 runs in an intensely fought battle in Dubai.

Winning the toss and batting first, skipper MS Dhoni from the word go showed what he wanted to achieve in this game. With the craze of chasing fading in the tournament and spinners coming into the play abundantly, Dhoni’s decision turned out to be a great move as his team scored a competitive 167 courtesy of some attacking batting by Sam Curran in the beginning and Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu in the middle.

The bowlers were superb for Chennai and picked up wickets at regular interval to hand Hyderabad a loss they deserved.

Captains' Viewpoint

With a long chat by Dhoni in the last game’s post-match presentation ceremony against Royal Challengers Bangalore, one thought that he only speaks much in lost causes, but in this game too, it was just difficult to stop him.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dhoni underscored the importance of the two points that his team earned after back to back losses. “Ultimately what really matters is you getting two points. What T20s have shown is that there are a few games that don't go your way and then there are some that go your way even when you haven't earned it,” he said.

Satisfied with the work done by his teammates, the captain cool said, “Today I felt we did a very good job even in the batting. There was some purpose with the bat and the batsmen assessed the situation very well.”

But batting wasn’t the only thing that impressed the captain. He was quick to point out the importance of planned execution in bowling while defending a mid-level total of 160-170, which the CSK bowlers did today.

“With a total like 160, it all depends on the start you get in the first six overs. The fast bowlers did the job, the spinners came into play and it was one game that was as close to being perfect. A lot depended on the fast bowlers. I just told them to be expressive on the field and hit their areas,” the captain said.

Further adding to the same point he said that the execution of the plan is the most important thing in the game. “There are some two-paced balls, some swing and some don't swing, and some get an extra bounce. What was needed was good execution of the plans and that was done by the fast bowlers,” he said.

Reasoning as to why he played another spinner in Piyush Chawala and left the youngster Jagadeesan, who did quite well in the last game that he played here, Dhoni said, “We used an extra spinner because an Indian batter hasn't done well for us. That's why Sam Curran went up and it wasn't fair on Jagadeesan as well to bat at seven or eight.

It seems that Sam Curran has impressed the captain as he praised him and called him the ‘complete cricketer’. “You need a seaming all-rounder, he plays the spinners well and he can give us those 15-45 runs. A good left armer is always good to have in the side. You keep wondering whether the ball would come in or leave the batsman,” Dhoni said while praising Curran.

Giving importance to the ‘process’ in achieving the desired target rather than just the success itself, Dhoni said, “We need to think more about the process, the points table will take care of itself.”

It was vintage Dhoni once again as he concluded by saying, “We need to still see where the errors were in this game and what is important is to not brush anything under the carpet just because we won the game.”

David Warner, the captain of the losing team admitted that his decision of going in with an extra bowler was not right. “The wicket was on the slower side, I think we needed an extra batter,” he said.

This is the second loss for Hyderabad in a row in games that could have been won by them. Speaking about it, Warner said, “We have to go back to the drawing board and work on few areas. I thought 160 was the right total to go after, but anything above that was always going to be difficult.”

The 33-year-old then said that he has always struggled to play against bowlers swinging the bowl. “It's difficult to play against bowlers who can swing the ball. There's always a challenge in the powerplay, but you have to take on the bowlers,” he said about getting dismissed to Sam Curran.

Team selection has not been that good for the Sunrises this season and making it a point, the captain said, “We need to monitor the wickets in the upcoming games and select the team accordingly. I think with our team and the depth that we have, we're always going to be one short either way.”

“Things (in the points table) are always congested in the middle. You got to beat the best teams, to make it to the top. We'll be facing the top teams in the next few days, so I'm up for the challenge and so are the other guys,” concluded Dave after discussing the way forward for the Orange Brigade.

Expert Opinion:

Experts too looked impressed by the way the Chennai team worked out their plans. Although there was no mention of the incident in which MS Dhoni could be seen intimidating umpire Paul Reiffel for a wide decision, analysts and senior journalists did give a thought to notice the all-important Sam Curran.

Senior cricket journalist on broadcast, Vimal Kumar too had the same opinion and agreed to Dhoni that Sam Curran is indeed a rare gem for the Super Kings.

Senior cricket analyst and commentator Harsha Bhogle tried to analyse the match in Dhoni's style of 'boat theory' saying that now it's Hyderabad that have visible holes in their ship.

The fact that the entire team of CSK came together and pulled out this special victory with a lot of efforts from all its players, was appreciated by senior cricket journalist and columnist Ayaz Memon.

Boria Majumdar, another famous cricket journalist chose to focus on the good thing as he retweeted an IPL video in which MS Dhoni can be seen parting important advice to youngsters Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma.

This win couldn't have come at a better time for Dhoni and co. as they would now head to a matchup against Delhi Capitals in three days time. For Hyderabad, they indeed need to go the drawing board as suggested by skipper Warner and then come out with a great strategy as they face the Kolkata Knight Riders on 18th of this month.

IPL 2020 |DC vs RR: Match Preview, Predicted XI & Dream11 Fantasy Picks

Two teams with two totally different mindsets and different sets of results in their last games would be up against each other today in Dubai in what could turn out to be a moving game of the tournament, especially for the Rajasthan Royals. For Delhi too, it would be a game of proving that their depth in batting, even without Rishabh Pant and that in bowling, even without Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra. Rajasthan will be looking to cash in on the experience of their Most Valuable Player (MVP) Ben Stokes, who has just joined the bandwagon and the team won the first game after a long time just as he joined. The Shreyas Iyer led the young side capable of turning any match on its head must and will be trying to concentrate on building long partnerships, which give quick runs to the team. The two teams met each other in Sharjah earlier and Delhi humbled Rajasthan in that game. In this game, a reenergized Royals would for sure be looking to square the ties and exact the revenge in the capital city of the Emirates. DC needs to finish strong: Delhi Capitals in most of the matches haven’t got the platform ready from where the likes of Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, and Axar Patel could launch the attack in the death overs. It is one of the most important aspects of the game where coach Ponting and his team of support staff need to pay attention to. Along with that, somebody in the camp also needs to tell Shikhar Dhawan that he needs to play fast at the opening position. His not being able to time the ball and hit hard according to the situation, is bringing the run rate down in the death overs, if he remains on the crease till them and even otherwise. Rajasthan needs stability in the playing XI: In the seven games that the ‘Halla Bol’ unit has played so far, the team combination has always looked unstable and the last game where a purely middle-order batsman Ben Stokes was asked to open the innings was just an example of that instability and lack of confidence of the management in the players. Between Robin Uthappa and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Steve Smith-led side has done a lot of experiment, they need to get a clarity of who their playing XI is and need to persist with them continuously for at least three games to get the desired results. Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kolkata Knight Riders: Match Details Match Number- 30 Date: 14th October 2020, at 7:30 PM IST Venue: Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai Pitch Report: With the weather getting colder and the same wickets getting used more and more, the pitches in UAE are now starting to show their true nature of being low and slow, a perfect blend for low scoring thrillers. The wicket for this match would be the same used for the clash between Hyderabad and Chennai and hence would be slow for sure. In that regard, the team winning the toss would like to bat first to make sure that the spinners make the best use of the pitch. Weather and Toss With winters approaching in the desert, the temperatures at the night are falling, humidity is decreasing and thus the ‘due’ is not having much effect on the game. The pitches are getting dryer and are helping spinners getting a grip from it, making the ball slower and helping it turn as well. Team News Delhi Capitals The team would look to bring back Hetmyer as, without him, it became very difficult for them to get to good score in the death, especially after Stoinis fell down as well. The services of Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishara will not be available to the team and hence replacements must be sought. Rishabh Pant’s absence is putting an extra burden of compulsively playing Alex Carey. If the team wishes to play Hetmyer, then they would have to do away with any of the fast bowlers as there is no other player apart from Carey who could keep. And if they wouldn’t like to change the combination of the South African duo of Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada, then most likely the same XI which played against Mumbai Indians would play this game as well. Expected XI Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer (c), Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje Rajasthan Royals The Rajasthan team wouldn’t want to tinker with the winning combination that they have found after quite a lot of failures. If any, then Yashasvi Jaiswal might be back in place of Robin Uthappa. Expected XI Jos Buttler (wk), Steven Smith (c), Robin Uthappa, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia, Jofra Archer, Shreyas Gopal, Jaydev Unadkat, Kartik Tyagi Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kolkata Knight Riders: Dream 11 team and suggestions Jos Buttler (wk), Sanju Samson, Steve Smith, Shreyas Iyer(c), Ben Stokes, Marcus Stoinis, Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia (vc), Harshal Patel, Jofra Archer, Kagiso Rabada, Captain: Shreyas Iyer Vice-captain: Rahul Tewatia

IPL 2020: Dinesh Karthik defends Rahul Tripathi's demotion following KKR's heavy defeat

Dinesh Karthik had a forgettable night at the wheel as Kolkata Knight Riders received a thrashing at the hands of Virat Kohli and Co. The playing XI gave an impression that the two-time champions are a bowler short in Sharjah. English cricketer Tom Banton replaced spinner Sunil Narine, and it resulted in Rahul Tripathi losing the opening slot. The move backfired in no time as Navdeep Saini’s searing pace got the better of a dodgy Banton early in the chase. KKR got off to a nervy start, getting to 50 in 7.4 overs. Shubman Gill too failed to show intent and he hardly got going, which put immense pressure on the rest of the batters. All the reputed customers fell like a pack of cards as the Bangalore side broke the back of Knight Riders’ famed batting line-up. On being asked whether KKR missed a trick by not sending an in-form Tripathi as an opener on a slowish track, Karthik replied to One Cricket, saying “No, I think once you play Tom Banton, you got to make sure that he opens because that is where he is best at. Also, Rahul Tripathi is versatile and he can adapt to any situation. So we went with Banton as he has opened at international cricket and has done well." The 82-run loss has put a dent on Kolkata’s run-rate, however, they still find themselves at the fourth spot with eight points while Royal Challengers have moved up to the third spot with ten points in their kitty. IPL 2020 | KKR vs RCB: AB de Villiers, Washington Sundar bully KKR to impel RCB to third spot

Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 194/2 (AB de Villiers 73*, Aaron Finch 47, Prasidh Krishna 1/42) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 112/9 (Shubman Gill 34, Andre Russell 16; Chris Morris 2/17) by 82 runs. Sharjah's featherbed unveiled its alter ego tonight as Royal Challengers Bangalore made light work of Kolkata Knight Riders to steamroll at fat 82-run win in the 28th match of the Indian Premier League 2020. AB de Villiers engineered a visual treat worth 73* off 33 balls before two-wicket hauls from Washington Sundar and Chris Morris sealed the deal, as RCB locomoted to the third spot on Monday, October 12. On a venue that has proven to be a spinner's worst nightmare, that wreckers-in-chief Yuzvendra Chahal and Sundar conceded just 32 runs in eight overs amongst them while booking three scalps deserves a 21-gun salute. KKR chase derails before taking flight Franchises generally don't lose sleep when asked to chase at Sharjah, regardless of the enormity of the task. Albeit the odds were heavily stacked against KKR tonight, given the demons lurking from the surface. And the dominoes tumbled in a rather uniform pattern. Tom Banton was a bundle of nerves on his debut, ricocheting Navdeep Saini's missile onto his stumps. Let alone playing his designated role of an enabler, Nitish Rana struggled even to navigate the ball off the thirty-yard circle, eventually perishing castled to an ungainly swipe off Sundar. Shubman Gill, the lone wolf who'd hitherto bound KKR's riposte with a sedate 34, fell prey to an episode of hideous miscommunication in an approach to sneak a tight run from backward point. Fresh off a morale-boosting half-century in a winning cause, talisman Dinesh Karthik couldn't come to KKR's rescue either as Chahal had him chopping on to a donkey-drop. Morgan, fit-again Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, and Rahul Tripathi each located catchers off miscued swats in their endeavour to narrow the deficit. Kamlesh Nagarkoti was the final casualty as RCB's net-run-rate tickled pink with a boost of such gigantic proportions. Finch bites the bullet to good results Having blown hot and cold in recent times, RCB's openers blazed a trail from the outset. Aaron Finch, a perpetual victim of the front-foot syndrome, had obviously gone back to the drawing board and figured out an escape route. What he did wasn't rocket science though. The right-hander shimmied down the track almost compulsively in a bid to negate the lateral movement and get his feet up and moving before impact. Safe to say, it worked like a charm. He whipped Pat Cummins through mid-wicket before putting his dancing shoes on to marmalize Prasidh Krishna over long-on. Devdutt Padikkal too made his presence felt with a couple of authoritative slashes off Pat Cummins, with no intentions whatsoever of keeping the ball along the turf. KKR read the conditions well to bounce back Assuming the responsibility of bowling the last over in the PowerPlay, Andre Russell banged hard seven-meter lengths to prod Finch into his shell while also mixing the pace to leave him guessing. The variations could've materialised in an incision had Nagarkoti not allowed Finch's aerial jab to burst through his fingers at short-fine. Declined entry in the wickets column, the star all-rounder took matters into his own hands, with his nippy yorker slinking underneath Padikkal's hoick to uproot the middle-stump for 32. Finch ploughed the same furrow, creating room to glide his arms only to let Krishna's half-volley strike timber. The scoreboard gleamed a trifling 107/2 in 14 overs despite breezy knocks from Padikkal and Finch, thanks to KKR thinking on their feet and amending their strategy midway to a cocktail of off-cutters and short-of-good knuckleballs. ABD beats the living daylights out of KKR However, the moment of truth awaited the purple shirts. Having bided his time initially to waddle to 10 off 11 balls, AB de Villiers threw caution to the wind, bulldozing an awesome 63 off the next 22 to pour cold water on KKR's stranglehold. Virat Kohli bore witness to this eye-popping massacre deliberately from the non-striker's end, milking singles to bring the range-hitting tormentor into the thick of the action during their century partnership for the third wicket. The increasingly sluggish nature of the pitch hardly ruffled de Villiers, who belaboured KKR left, right, and centre to help RCB raid a cosmic 80 off the last five overs. What's next in store? In the pink of their health with five victories in seven games, RCB shouldn't break a sweat in elbowing a woebegone Kings XI Punjab on Thursday, October 15. The next hurdle in KKR's ebb-and-flow ride is table-toppers Mumbai Indians, quite a daunting one at that, with whom they lock horns on Friday, October 16.
