IPL 2020 | CSK vs RR: Buttler holds fort to lend Rajasthan two vital points

Brief scores:

Chennai Super Kings 125/5 in 20 overs (MS Dhoni 28, Ravindra Jadeja 35*)

lost to

Rajasthan Royals 126/3 in 17.3 overs (Jos Buttler 70*; Deepak Chahar 2-18) by seven wickets.

Jos Buttler's stroke-filled 70* bailed Rajasthan Royals from choppy waters in their quest of ticking 126 as Chennai Super Kings witness in horror their gold spoon morphing into a wooden variant. Decaying in the unfamiliar territories of the rock bottom of the points table, MS Dhoni and his troops are virtually out of contention for the play-offs jostle, fragmenting to their seventh defeat of the campaign in the 37th match of the Indian Premier League on Monday, October 19 at Abu Dhabi.

Hazlewood delivers the goods

Both franchises amended their speed department, with CSK offering a debut to Josh Hazlewood and RR bringing on board Ankit Rajpoot. With leggie Karn Sharma bleeding 34 at an economy of 11.30 versus Delhi Capitals and was plausibly asked to carry drinks as CSK roped in veteran Piyush Chawla. In retrospect, Hazlewood was a silver lining to their cloud, wrapping up his maiden appearance of the season with competent figures of 4-0-19-1.

CSK make a mountain out of a molehill

Yes, the pitch wasn't exactly a batsman's friend, but that's not to take anything away from CSK's discipline early on. The swing king, Deepak Chahar had Ben Stokes dragging on following a couple of authoritative slaps. Robin Uthappa premeditated a scoop only for Hazlewood to bang it in short as MS Dhoni settled beneath the dolly.

Sanju Samson holds an untoward reputation of being a one-hit-wonder ever since he burst on the domestic scene, and we're afraid that his recent performances in the ongoing edition are doing little to manifest otherwise. Chahar strangled him down the leg side as Dhoni snaffled the dying chance in the webbing between the thumb and forefinger.

Buttler the red signal to CSK's lorry

RR were posed to lose their fourth on 28 but the snickometer tracked a faint edge, much to the surprise of Steve Smith himself who'd sauntered past thirty-yard circle, under the impression that he was nothing but dead plumb. Though the skipper took a while to drift into his element, Jos Buttler had a spring in his step. He reverse-swept Ravindra Jadeja with aplomb before timing from the screws a few not-so-bad deliveries by Shardul Thakur.

Piyush Chawla too endured a tough day at the office, with Buttler leathering him for three consecutive boundaries in the 15th over and a clean-as-a-whistle six later for good measure. The 98-run association between the senior pros yielded a dampener in any CSK plans of engineering a heist, as normalcy was established in the aftermath of last night's mayhem.

How did Rajasthan's attack fare?

Pretty clinically. For starters, Jofra Archer breathed fire. He roughed up Sam Curran with some nasty chin music before worming out Faf du Plessis thanks to a limp square dab. Shane Watson grinded a pull through cow corner and relished a fortuitous lemon cut off Kartik Tyagi, but the pacer fought redemption as his aerial flick found catching short mid-wicket to precision.

Under the radar, but mightily effective

Rajasthan's spin twins threw their hats in the ring forthwith, numbing CSK to a brittle 56/4. While Shreyas Gopal proved Curran's nemesis on 22, Rahul Tewatia guiled Ambati Rayudu into an agricultural swat after technology kept his nose in a close lbw shave. The partners-in-crime were at the very heart of RR's middle-overs compression, baring an exemplary 32 amongst them and snaring a reward apiece.

Jadeja being squandered at number six?

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja cobbled a fifty-partnership to usher CSK towards the light at the end of the tunnel. The duo refrained from heedless pomp and show, exchanging strike and smothering a few boundaries along the carpet. It was a tailor-made platform for the left-right combo to go for the jugular, but Dhoni was nobbled a millimetre short in his pursuit to steal a brace off Archer's fumble. The firebrand quick even put an absolute sitter down to reprieve Kedar Jadhav. For all his spine-chilling pace, it's imperative he goes the extra mile to work on his fielding. Jadeja presented a strong case for promotion in the batting order, unfurling a treasure worth 35 to spare CSK a few blushes.

What's next in store?

Rajasthan Royals are gathering steam, slowly but surely, but these top-order collapses aren't going to serve them well in the long run. And they desperately want crown jewel Samson to wake up from hibernation mode. He'd have a fair crack at doing so when he plies his trade against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, October 22.

Chennai Super Kings looked like they brought a pencil to a lightsabre fight in their nightmarish stint this year. The bags will be packed soon, and thus salvaging pride and extending opportunities to fringe players would be high on their agenda as Mumbai Indians fling down the gauntlet on Friday, October 23.

MS Dhoni becomes most-capped player in IPL history with 200 matches

The captain of Chennai Super Kings Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first player to feature in 200 Indian Premier League matches after he stepped onto the field at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi against Rajasthan Royals. Asked about the feat, MS Dhoni was at his usual best of downplaying big moments and said “It's just a number. I have been fortunate to have played so many games," said Dhoni after reaching the iconic landmark in IPL. Dhoni has been one of the prominent faces of the IPL since its inception and has led the men in yellow to three IPL titles and two Champions League titles. He has also featured in the Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2016 and 2017 editions when the CSK banned from taking part in the tournament. He is closely followed by his former deputy at the CSK-- Suresh Rain who has 192 appearances and the captain of Mumbai Indians Rohit Sharma who has 197 appearances. The Super Kings have struggled to keep their legacy of dominating the IPL seasons intact as the team has looked out of depth in both bowling and batting departments. MS Dhoni, too, has not been able to live up to the expectations of the franchise and its fans and the team has suffered six defeats out of nine matches played so far. He has amassed 4,568 runs from 200 IPL matches with an astounding average strike rate combo of 41.52 and 137.67 over the years. He has also accounted for 149 dismissals that include 110 catches and 39 stumpings.

IPL 2020 | KXIP vs DC: Match Preview, Predicted XI & Dream11 Fantasy Picks

A lot has changed in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League for both these teams and the points table of the season since these two teams came up against each other in the current edition. The KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab had started dominating the early part of the match against the Delhi Capitals on the back of intense bowling spells from Sheldon Cottrell and Mohammed Shami before Marcus Stoinis rescued them and took them to a defendable total. While Chasing, Mayank Agarwal had carried the team towards an unlikely win after the departure of the first five star batsmen before squandering the chase and failing to score 1 run from the last three balls. If anything, that match set the precedent for the Kings XI Punjab for the coming days into the tournament, and the team could not rectify the holes which were exposed on the night against the Capitals. While the Kings XI Punjab were not able to plug their holes and are find their position in the league hanging by a thread, the Delhi Capitals identified the chink their armour and found a perfect tempo for batting in different situations and also brought variety in the bowling attack to dominate the tournament so far and sit comfortably at the top of the ladder. Ironically, it was super over where the Kings XI were humiliated by the Delhi Capitals took away the soul of the side and the team is raring to face the same team after getting their mojo back in--yes, the usual suspect-- super over, not one but two, against the Mumbai Indians in their last game. The men from Punjab have played a lot of close game this season and have failed to seize the moments that turned out to be match-winning ones except for the last game when Mohammed Shami did something remarkable and outgunned Jasprit Bumrah and defend a mere six runs in the super over against the duo of Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma while Mayank Agarwal redeemed himself by hitting two back-to-back boundaries off Trent Boult to wash the sin of losing that game against the Capitals off his hands. The opening pair of Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul has been brilliant so far in the season but their lack of decisiveness in strokeplay and intensity have cost the Kings XI a lot of games and the captain Rahul admitted after the last game that they don’t want this habit to go on for any longer. He would be hopeful that the belief the team has got after the win over Mumbai will drive them in the battles of must-win territory. On the other hand, the Delhi Capitals have cracked the IPL code this season and it looks like the perseverance the franchise had shown on players such as Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and the coach Ricky Ponting is closing on to spying off this season. The team has been able to produce different match-winners this season and when the team found itself in dire straits, different players have put their hands up to take them over the line. The Team has played 9 matches so far in this season and won seven out of them. In each of those wins, seven different players have won the man of the match award that establishes the fact that the team is clicking as a group and players are standing up to crunch situations whenever asked to deal with. The fact that the team has to deal with some injury scares and still has managed to win games speaks volumes of the depth in the squad. The Kings XI Punjab will have their task cut out and especially the openers who otherwise have been in superb form to replicate their form against the trio of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Ravichandran Ashwin. On the bowling front, they have to defend against the Delhi Capitals’ batting lineup that looks daunting to start with Shikhar Dhawan who has come back to his red-hot form, and the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis to do the damage in the middle and end overs. Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Capitals: Match Details Match Number- 38 Date: 19th October 2020, at 7:30 PM IST, 06:00 PM Local, 2.00 PM GMT Venue: Dubai Broadcast: Star Sports and Hotstar Pitch and Weather The match between the Delhi Capitals and the Kings XI Punjab will be the 20th match of this season to be played on the Dubai international stadium pitch and although a new pitch will be used for the game, it is not going to be any quicker. The pitches have started to be slow down and if due does not impact a majority of the second innings, the match may very well be tilted towards the side batting first from the outset. The weather conditions in Dubai is likely to be on the relatively cooler side with the temperature dipping below 30 degrees and humidity in and around 50 per cent. Team News Kings XI Punjab Chris Jordan had come into this tournament with a reputation of being a safe death bowler but was not able to enhance his reputation and rather destroyed by bowling highly expensive overs in the nd part of the games but on the night against the Mumbai Indians when KL Rahul needed him to come well under pressure, he showed the glimpses of what his best may look like. The English all-rounder is likely to be retained for the next game and with him, the whole playing XI is most likely to be unchanged for the game against the Delhi Capitals. Expected XI KL Rahul (c & wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Deepak Hooda, Chris Jordan, Murugan Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh Delhi Capitals Rishabh Pant has not recovered from his injury and that would be a longer rope for the highly talented Aussie wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carrey who is yet to find his best this tournament. Shreyas Iyer would hope Ajinkya Rahane finds his best and provide a brisk and as well as a stable platform for the side after the swashbuckling pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. Shreyas Iyer himself would be itching for a big score after missing out in the last couple of games. The bowling attack looks potent and there are no injury concerns either to change the outlook of the lineup. The Capitals will look to field an unchanged XI. Expected XI Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer (c), Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (wk), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Tushar Deshpande, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Capitals: Dream 11 team and suggestion KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Axar Patel, Marcus Stoinis, Murugan Ashwin, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ravichandran Ashwin Captain: Shreyas Iyer Vice-captain: Mayank Agarwal
