India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be played from August 30 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, is set to be picked in New Delhi on August 21. As per reports, skipper Rohit Sharma will attend the selection meeting in the national capital.
Until now, there was no update on the fitness of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, but as per news18, both the batsmen are fit and available for selection.
“KL Rahul is fit and available for selection. He has been regularly batting and wicketkeeping and looks good fitness-wise. With regards to Shreyas Iyer, signs are extremely positive,” a source close to developments told News18.
If KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are fit for the tournament, it will be a big boost for the team which has been struggling due to the inconsistency in the performance of its middle order batsmen.
Moreover, there is a high chance that Tilak Varma, who impressed in the West Indies T20Is, might get a chance to play in the Asia Cup as a specialist number 4. With Jasprit Bumrah looking good in the first T20I against Ireland, the seam bowler is likely to spearhead the Indian pace attack.
The 2023 Asia Cup will be the 16th edition of the Asia Cup, and it will be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The tournament will be played by 6 teams. Sri Lanka are the defending champions.
It will be the first Asia Cup to be co-hosted by multiple countries; four matches will be played in Pakistan, while nine matches will be played in Sri Lanka. The match between India and Pakistan will be played in Kandy on September 2.
