Games are coming thick and fast in the 12th edition of the ICC Women's CWC as we are heading towards another blockbuster of a game. In match number 13, South Africa Women are clashing against England Women at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on March 14, 2022.
Both the teams are having an opposite World Cup so far. The Proteas Women have won both their games after toiling hard and are in third place with four points to their name. On the other hand, England have had a rough start to the tournament that nobody expected. Losing two close matches, they are now in sixth place and will hope to get off the mark in the game against South Africa.
The Proteas had fought for the wins against the two Asian sides so far. The previous match against Pakistan Women went down to the wire as the Proteas side held their nerve to win in a last-over thriller.
Laura Wolvaardt (75) and skipper Sune Luus (62) scored fifties to propel them to a respectable total, but it was below par. Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, and Ayabonga Khaka were the seamers who took the bulk of the wickets against Pakistan. Notably, Ismail bowled a fantastic last over to win the game for her side by six runs.
On the other hand, the defending champions wouldn't have guessed that they would struggle to put points on the board. They lost both their games after giving a tough fight to their opponents. On both occasions, they lost it after having it in their kitty. They will be looking to make a strong comeback and tell the world that they are not bowing down without a fight.
Heather Knight needs to play a captain's innings alongside Natalie Sciver, who is in prime form. They will expect their openers, Tammy Beaumont and Lauren Winfield Hill, to set a platform for the middle-order batters. Katherine Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone need to be on top of their game to restrict their opposition. Ecclestone has done it in the previous game after picking up three Windies wickets.
"Our girls are enjoying New Zealand. We are playing in Bay Oval for the next couple of matches. Not the start we wanted. I bowled well in the second match but couldn't perform against Australia in the first game. We were in the game till the very end but couldn't win both the games. We are hoping to make a comeback", Sophie Ecclestone said in an interview before the game against South Africa Women.
These two sides met each other during the warm-up game, where the South Africa Women's side skittled out cheaply as England chased the total of 139 with ease.
