ICC Women’s CWC 2022 | It’s a great opportunity to beat Australia in an ODI: Laura Wolvaardt

The voguish South African batter Laura Wolvaardt seems confident in her team’s preparation ahead of the crucial clash against table-toppers Australia in Wellington on Tuesday (March 22).

Although South Africa haven’t played a single ODI against the Southern Stars in the last five years, Wolvaardt expressed that the Proteas women have the experience of playing alongside Australian cricketers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

Wolvaardt has played for both Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers in WBBL. Experienced stars Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail represented Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers, respectively, while Mignon du Preez and Chloe Tryon donned the attire of Hobart Hurricanes.

Skipper for this tournament, Sune Luus has also donned Heats’ colours in the past; therefore, the 22-year-old believes that these experiences will be handy for preparing strategies against Australia.

On being asked whether the WBBL experience will be helpful for the green and gold women or not, Wolvaardt said, “I think it helps a lot. Australia is actually one of the sides we should be most prepared for because a lot of our girls have spent a lot of time playing in the same team and against a lot of their players.”

The dynamic opener also reckoned that the experience of playing together works both ways, and therefore, it can prove to be an advantage or a disadvantage on a given day.

“But I guess it goes both ways. We might know their games a bit better, and they might know ours as well, having spent some time over there. It’s an advantage and also a disadvantage”, Wolvaardt cited.

Talking about their plans against the mighty Aussies, the right-handed batter said they wouldn’t take the opponents lightly and stressed seeing this game as just another normal one. However, she emphasised on keeping the basics right on the match day so that they could beat Australia for the very first time in an ODI.

“Firstly, Australia are a world-class side. They are number 1 in the world. It’s not a game we are going to take lightly”, Wolvaardt expressed.

“I guess we just have to see it as a normal game. Watch the ball, we can’t go out there playing the player. It’s still about playing the ball. I don’t think we have ever beaten them in an ODI, so it’s a great opportunity to do that”, she further added.

When enquired about her game plan against the fiery Australian new-ball bowler Darcie Brown, the Cape Town-born woman said she would like to play Brown’s first few overs cautiously and capitalise on the start later.

“Obviously she has been taking some wickets upfront with the new ball and moving it nicely. For me, it will be about getting through those first few overs. They have some world-class bowlers and I have to respect the good balls and hopefully, we can set up a good score for the team”, she said.

South Africa is currently at the second position in the points table with four victories from as many games, just below Australia.

However, they will miss Masabata Klaas due to an injury and are expected to make at least one change against Australia tomorrow.

IPL 2022 | Best is yet to come: Sangakkara predicts strong season for Sanju Samson

There is no doubt that Rajasthan Royals’ skipper Sanju Samson is one of the most debated names in Indian cricket at the moment. Experts were divided in the previous years between his sky high potential and output in the game, but in the more recent times, the debate has surrounded whether he should be a permanent part of the national team or not. Samson, who is going to be at the helm of Rajasthan Royals for the second season in a row has found support in Royals’ director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara who called him one of the most destructive batsmen going around. “Irrespective of him being the captain or the future of RR, he is one of the best T20 players,” Sangakkara stated during the Clubhouse conversation on Red Bull Cricket. Rajasthan Royals gave Samson his break in the IPL and have seen him grow into a mature batsman. Samson’s record over the past three seasons speaks for itself as the batter has gone on to show incredible maturity to become one of the top middle overs hitters in the country, alongside the likes of Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal. Sangakkara delved upon the same and stated that he admires him for those qualities and that Samson has every ability you want in a batter. “He is a magnificent player, destructive, match-winner, has every ability that you want in a batter. He was captain before I took over last season. I have come to know him really well and admire him.” Samson scored a mammoth 484 runs last season at an astonishing strike-rate of 137 playing as an anchor. It is hard to believe, but Samson actually has tried to slow himself down for the sake of stability in the order and currently takes time to build his innings, something that speaks volumes about his growth and love for RR. "He’s got such a passion for RR. He started here, he values that. He is a captain who is willing to admit that he doesn’t know everything as yet and he is going to grow into it. He’s got natural leadership qualities. He’s going to get better and better," Sangakkara admitted. Samson will look to capitalise on the fairly deep batting line-up that Rajasthan have this season, with the likes of Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal in the ranks. One might see Samson shifting to the middle order this season, to accommodate specialist openers of white ball cricket. IPL will be Samson’s final bid to the selectors of the national team for a spot in the T20 World Cup squad and it remains to be seen if he can come good on it.

PAK vs AUS | 3rd Test | Day 1: Pakistan turn tables after Smith-Khawaja batting masterclass

Pakistan pulled things back in their favour after picking up some important wickets against Australia in the final session of first day’s play during the third Test in Lahore. After suffering a couple of early blows, the visitors scripted a fine return as they rode on brilliant batting performances from Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith. The two batters chipped in with individual fifties and frustrated the Pakistan bowlers in the second session to take the side to 145/2 at Tea. But the home side then turned the fortunes for themselves in the third session and scalped three wickets including the dismissals of Smith and Khawaja as Australia eventually ended the day’s proceedings at 232/5. Shaheen rattles top-order Opting to bat first, Australia were in a spot of bother early on Day 1 after Shaheen Afridi removed opener David Warner and batter Marnus Labuschagne in the same over. The left-handed pacer first trapped Warner in front of the stumps for 7 on a length delivery that just came into the left-hander and then scalped the priced wicket of Labuschagne who was caught behind for a two-ball duck by Mohammad Rizwan after edging a touch fuller ball while going for a drive. The visiting team was reduced to 8/2. Smith, Khawaja show resistance Australia were on the backfoot when Steve Smith joined Khawaja in the middle. But the two batters showed a lot of mettle and helped the Australian side come out of a tricky situation. While they began the rescue operation in a cautious manner, the left-right batting duo didn’t really shy away from scoring boundaries on deliveries that came in their radar. In fact, Smith’s elegant cover drives became a highlight of the day. The two batters took Australia to 145/2 at Tea. Pakistan script comeback Both Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja were looking pretty steady and stable before a brilliant delivery from Naseem Shah sent Smith packing in the third session. Smith went deep into his crease a bit and tried to play a length ball from Naseem towards the on side but missed his stroke and it hit him on his pads. The former Australian captain was trapped in front of the stumps for 59 and a 138-run stand was finally broken. Khawaja was later joined by Travis Head and the duo then scored 41 runs for the fourth wicket before the partnership was ended, courtesy a phenomenal catch from Babar Azam in the slips to dismiss Khawaja for 91. The left-handed opener failed to anticipate the turn on a length delivery from Sajid Khan and closed the face of his bat early while trying to negotiate it towards the on side. The ball took the edge and Babar who was stationed in the slips grabbed a stunner. Khawaja missed out on yet another Test hundred. Pakistan then managed to pick another wicket after Shah removed Head for 26. While Naseem and Shaheen have bagged a couple of wickets, Sajid has one to his name so far in the match. “I always try to take early wickets with the new ball. The wicket is pretty good for batting, my plan was to bowl in the right areas. We (the pacers) didn't get a lot of help in the last two Tests, so we thought about being consistent, bowl wicket-to-wicket. We (as a bowling group) wanted to execute our plans and think we did so,” Afridi said after the day’s play.
