ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifiers B 2022 | Day 1 Round-up

The much-awaited ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifiers 2022 kicked off in Zimbabwe on Monday, July 11.


Eight teams- Zimbabwe, USA, Jersey, Singapore, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Uganda, PNG- are vying for two elusive spots in the first round of the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.


Four games were played in Bulawayo on Monday.


Here's how each side fared:


Zimbabwe v Singapore, Group A 


Hosts Zimbabwe kickstarted their T20 World Cup qualifier with a bang as they swatted aside Singapore by 111 runs to claim a dominating win in Bulawayo.


Batting first, the home side rode on whirlwind knocks from Sikandar Raza (87 off 40) and Sean Williams (53 off 35) to hammer 236/5 against a listless Singapore attack.


In response, Singapore could only manage 125/7 in 20 overs with Janak Prakash top-scoring with an unbeaten 33-ball 32. For Zimbabwe, Tendai Chatara (3/14 in 4) and Blessing Muzarabani (2/21 in 4) were the pick of the bowlers.

Jersey v United States, Group A  


An unbeaten 55-ball 101 from opener Steven Taylor has helped the United States of America notch up a commanding 8-wicket win over Jersey.


Chasing 155, the USA rode on a magnificent hundred from Taylor to make a mockery of the target set by Jersey. Taylor smashed as many as 5 sixes and 12 fours during his 55-ball stay and along with Aaron James (38 off 30) took his side past the finishing line in the 19th over.


Earlier, four wickets between Rusty Theron (2/28 in 4) and Nisarg Patel (2/26 in 4) ensured that Jersey could not get more than 154 despite Asa Tribe scoring an unbeaten 45-ball 73 and Benjamin Ward chipping in with a 22-ball 38.

Netherlands v PNG, Group B


An all-round dominant performance from the Scott Edwards-led unit has helped the Netherlands notch up a commanding 52-run win over PNG in their Group B opener.


Batting first, the Dutch rode on handy cameos from Max O'Dowd (32 off 27), Stephen Myburg (39 off 24), and Bas De Leede (33 off 27) to post 163/7 in 20. 


For PNG, Semo Kamea (2/25 in 4) and Charles Amini (2/28 in 4) were the pick of the bowlers.


However, the target proved to be way beyond PNG's reach as Fred Klaassen (2/18 in 4), Logan van Beek (3/17 in 3.4), De Leede (2/13 in 3) and Paul van Meekeren (2/22 in 3) ran past their batting line-up to knock them over for 111 in the 20th over. Only three batsmen- Lega Siaka (11 off 17), Charles Amini (21 off 26) & Sese Bau (35 off 34)- could cross double figures.

Hong Kong v Uganda, Group B 


Dinesh Nakrani's 4-12 and an unbeaten 41-ball 28 from Riazat Ali Shah has helped Uganda pip Hong Kong in a low-scoring thriller in Bulawayo on Monday.


Having managed just 87/9 - thanks largely to Kinchit Shah scoring 37- in their quota of 20 overs, Hong Kong made a decent first of their defence as Aizaz Khan (3/22 in 4) and Mohammad Ghazanfar (2/12 in 4) ran past Uganda's batting order.


However, Riazat held his nerve till the end and along with Frank Nsubuga (10 off 15) took his team past the finishing line in the final over.
