In a massive step towards encouraging inclusivity and supporting global cricket development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday announced the formation of a dedicated task force aimed at supporting displaced Afghan women cricketers. The initiative has been launched in collaboration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia (CA).

ICC Steps Up For Displaced Afghan Women Cricketers

As part of the initiative, the ICC will establish a dedicated fund to give direct financial support to Afghan women cricketers who have had their dreams cut short due to turmoil back home.

The support will make sure that these athletes have the resources required to continue pursuing their cricketing dreams despite difficult circumstances.

This financial aid will be accompanied by a comprehensive high-performance programme which will offer access to elite coaching, state-of-the-art facilities and personalised mentorship to help these cricketers further develop their skills and remain competitive on the global stage.

Jay Shah Reiterates ICC’s Commitment To Inclusivity

Commenting on the initiative, ICC Chairman, Jay Shah stated, “At the International Cricket Council, we are deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring every cricketer has the opportunity to shine, regardless of their circumstances. In collaboration with our valued partners, we are proud to launch this task force and support fund, complemented by a comprehensive high-performance programme, to ensure displaced Afghan women cricketers can continue their journey in the sport.”

The ICC believes this initiative will play a vital role in preserving the sporting careers of Afghan women cricketers while also reinforcing cricket’s unique ability to unite communities across borders and cultural divides.

Other Key Updates From The ICC Board

Furthermore, the ICC Board approved the consolidated ICC Group audited financial statements for the year ending 2024.

Moreover, following recommendations from the Chief Executives Committee, the ICC confirmed several key appointments:

  • ICC Women’s Cricket Committee: Catherine Campbell (re-appointed), Avril Fahey, and Pholetsi Moseki
  • ICC Men’s Cricket Committee: Sourav Ganguly (re-appointed as Chair), Hamid Hassan, Desmond Haynes, Temba Bavuma, VVS Laxman (re-appointed), and Jonathan Trott

These appointments prove the ICC’s continued commitment to strengthening the governance and strategic development of the sport at both the men’s and women’s levels.
