The Indian women's cricket team faced heavy trolling on social media following their poor performance against New Zealand in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024. Despite the ICC introducing an AI moderation tool to curb online abuse, the team was still subjected to intense criticism across platforms.

Indian Women cricket team, led by veteran Harmanpreet Kaur, entered the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup with high expectations. Owing to recent form and overall dominance in world cricket, India were viewed as a premier title contending team.

However, Kaur and her troops were humbled by New Zealand in the first league game itself. New Zealand, led by Sophie Devine's unbeaten 57 off 36 balls, set a formidable total of 160.

However, India's chase crumbled as they were bowled out for 102 in just 19 overs. New Zealand's Rosemary Mair was the standout bowler, claiming 4 wickets for 19 runs.

India Women on the receiving end of intense criticism

The defeat sparked a wave of online criticism, leaving fans frustrated. Many social media users criticised the team heavily for their shortcomings with some posts more brutal than the others.

Notably, ahead of the tournament, the ICC announced the launch of a social media moderation AI program aimed at fostering a positive and inclusive online environment for teams and players.  In their release, the ICC explained that over 60 players had already opted into the initiative, which seeks to protect players from toxic content and safeguard their mental health.

Unfortunately, the online abuse persisted despite these efforts, with Indian players becoming targets after their underwhelming performance.

Having said that, India will now look to bounce back in their crucial match against Pakistan on October 6 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Can India bring in any changes for the Pakistan clash?

A high-pressure game against arch-rivals Pakistan is on the horizon for the India Women's cricket team. In a must-win game, Harmanpreet Kaur could likely enforce a couple of changes in the playing XI.

While Deepti Sharma will likely keep her place, Radha Yadav could get an opportunity over Arundhati Reddy, given her experience and pitch conditions, which tend to assist spinners more.
