  • I Thought That While I Have Time And A Van I Could Do Something To Help Says Stuart Meaker

'I thought that while I have time and a van, I could do something to help', says Stuart Meaker

As they say, ‘The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention’. The former English fast bowler Stuart Meaker has won the hearts of millions of Ukrainian refugees by helping them across the Poland border. Starting from his home in Godalming, Meaker drove through Dover, Calais, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany to reach out to these war-affected innocent people and is currently busy fulfilling their basic needs.

When enquired about his inspirational effort, the South Africa-born fast bowler said that he hates feeling helpless and understands the situation the refugees are going through right now. So, he decided to do his bit for these needy people and took the initiative.

“I hate feeling helpless, and I thought that while I have time and a van, I could do something to help”, Meaker said.

The former England international also listed the things he has supplied to the refugees so far by saying “I brought medical supplies, syringes, nappies, formula, clothes- that kind of thing. They need to be separated and put in other trucks to be taken to places like Kharkiv and Kyiv.”

Furthermore, Meaker stressed that he would head towards the towns near the border if needed and highly praised the efforts of the Ukrainian women in helping these things get transported.

“I’m still a way from the border towns, but plan to head there if needed”, Meaker said. “We’ve been joined by some Ukrainian women who are seeking refuge in Poland, and it’s incredible to see the stuff they’re lifting. They’re doing it to help their men and husbands, who are back home fighting for their country”, the 32-year-old added.

Once known as one of the fastest English bowlers, Meaker’s international career was marred mainly by injuries. He represented England in 2 ODIs and as many T20Is, in which he picked a total of 4 wickets. He has a unique distinction of being the only bowler to have dismissed Virat Kohli in 2 consecutive T20I innings.
