I think he has paid his penalty: Greg Chappell bats for Warner's captaincy

Former Australian captain Greg Chappell has opined that Australia should open the door for David Warner to lead them in international cricket.

Notably, Warner was banned from performing any formal leadership role for life following his involvement in the infamous ball-tampering scandal that shook the foundations of Australian cricket.

However, Steven Smith, the co-participant in the ill-famed incident, was recently bestowed with vice-captaincy during the Ashes 2021-22.

Speaking to Fox Sports News, Chappell expressed his displeasure over this kind of differential treatment for Warner by Cricket Australia.

"He obviously had a central role in what happened but he was not the one that was involved and I don't know why he should be treated any differently," Chappell said.

Chappell, who wore the baggy green on 87 occasions, reckoned that Warner would have emerged as a fantastic captain for Australia had he been assigned the role.

The legendary batter further said that Warner has served enough for his misconduct, and it's time that Australia should entrust the swashbuckling opener with leadership.

“He’s served his punishment, he is a good leader in the side and no doubt if he had had the opportunity, I’m sure he would have captained the side quite well,” Chappell said.

“I think he’s paid his penalty and it’s time to open it up for leadership roles,” the 73-year-old concluded.
