'I am sure Pooran will do a very good job' - Haynes shows confidence on new white-ball skipper

Desmond Haynes, the chief selector of the West Indies men's cricket team, is confident of Nicholas Pooran faring well in the leader's role as the Trinidadian gears up to marshall his troops in the upcoming white-ball tours of the Netherlands and Pakistan.

In the new dawn of West Indies cricket, Pooran will take over the charge of the team, with their former skipper Kieron Pollard announcing his international retirement recently.

Pooran's first assignment as the team's captain will come in the form of the away tours of the Netherlands and Pakistan, where the Caribbean nation will play three ODIs each.

Speaking on the 26-year-old's appointment, Haynes seemed hopeful that Pooran will prosper in the new role.

"As a leader, you have seen the way he has handled himself in the games that he has captained the West Indies, the way how he carried himself in IPL. So, I am sure that Pooran will do a very good job in leading these young men," Haynes said in a press conference on Monday (May 9).

Further, the former West Indies batter expressed his wish to see Pooran don the white jersey in the near future.

"I had a chat with Nicholas when I first got the job a couple months ago and he was talking about his involvement in playing cricket for Trinidad and making sure he played the longer version and trying to see if he could get into the Test side.

"I would love to see him playing Test cricket," Haynes desired.
