'We are looking to get as many points as possible from these games' - CWI chief selector

As the West Indies are scheduled to tour Netherlands and Pakistan for a three-match ODI series in May and June 2022, it gives them a chance to rise up in the 2020-23 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League points table, with the team currently languishing at the 10th spot.

The 13-team Super League will hand the top eight sides a direct entry to the 2023 ODI World Cup. West Indies, as of now, are only placed above South Africa, Zimbabwe and Netherlands on the table and have so far gathered 50 points with five wins and 10 losses.

When OneCricket asked the chief selector of the West Indies men's team about their qualification chances, he stated that the team sees the upcoming matches against Netherlands and Pakistan as an opportunity to climb up to the top half of the points table.

"What we need to do is look at these games, and when we look at the games, we realise they are very important for us in the lead up to the 2023 World Cup. So, for sure, we are looking to get as many points as possible from these games," Haynes said in a virtual press conference on Monday (May 9).

With Jason Holder rested for the upcoming white-ball tours, Haynes mentioned the names that can fill in the former's shoes.

"I think the likes of Kyle Mayers, Rovman Powell, Shepherd (Ramario), Alzarri Joseph can bat as well. I think we do have some people there who can really fill Holder's boots," the former West Indies batter asserted.

When asked about Dominic Drakes' non-selection, the 66-year-old added that the all-rounder can be a tremendous T20 asset but should feature in more four-day matches to stretch his improvement.

"I see Dominic Drakes as a very talented young cricketer. We want these guys to play more cricket. Dominic. He has it in him to be a very good T20 cricketer. We watched him play in CPL last year; he was very successful. But I still feel that for someone like Dominic Drakes, he should play more four-day cricket and would then improve even quicker," Haynes shared.
