  • Head Coach Phil Simmons Holds West Indies Batting Under The Scanner For Recent Series Defeat

Head coach Phil Simmons holds West Indies' batting under the scanner for recent series defeat

After suffering a whitewash in the ODI series at the hands of the Indian team, the West Indies head coach, Phil Simmons, lamented his side's batting, which led to their undoing.

As West Indies failed to bat 50 overs and could not even reach the 200-run mark in each of the ODIs, their batters' struggles are quite evident. However, the series loss against India did not surprise many as the Caribbean side has been dull, to say the least in the format lately.

Simmons lambasted the batters and admitted that their consistent poor show dented their chances of winning the last two games.

"It does need urgent attention because it has lost us the last two games. When you bowl India out for 230 and 260, you expect to chase it. Under a year ago, we were cruising to 280-290 against Sri Lanka who have similar spinners. So batting is a huge concern and people have to stand up now as we go into our next set of ODIs in June," Simmons was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Further expressing his shock over the mode of dismissals, Simmons termed the series loss against India as "hurtful".

"We are a little bit further ahead with our batting assessments in T20s than we are in ODIs. The mode of dismissals are I think the biggest issue. It doesn't make for good watching. We can't keep going like this. We started putting things together last year when we played Sri Lanka and Australia, but this one is hard to swallow. Though I'm not someone who shows emotions outwardly, it's hurtful and the players know that," he added.

Simmons emphasised how game awareness is critical, citing Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant's example. But on the other hand, West Indies' batters did not apply themselves better and often panicked in crucial stages.

"It's a simple thing, we've got to assess situations and play according to it. Most guys batting in the top six have Test hundreds, so they can bat. We saw how Shreyas [Iyer] and [Rishabh] Pant batted when they were in trouble. They assessed the situation and batted for a while. We can't be 100 for 6 in 20 overs, that is the crux of the matter," Simmons mentioned.

Simmons also touched upon the effects of closing down the High Performance Centre (HPC) in Barbados. He acknowledged that shutting HPC has added to West Indies' batting woes.

"That is one of the downfalls of us having closed down the HPC and it's something that was working for us. But there have been discussions on getting something like that back up and running. It's something everyone believes is needed in the Caribbean and it's in the pipeline, but as we know, the board is not flush [financially], so things take little longer to put together. We all know it's urgent. It's something that is needed in our cricket. Unfortunately, a lot of things are urgent, some more priority than the others. All I know for now is we all think it's urgent and it is being treated as that," Simmons concluded.

IPL 2022 auction | Day 1: As it happened

An eventful day at the Indian Premier League came to an end with 97 players auctioned off in Bangalore on Saturday, 12 February. Ishan Kishan was the costliest player on the day and was bought back by Mumbai Indians at Rs 15.25 crore making him the second most expensive Indian player in Indian Premier League history. Things were good for other Indian players as well with Avesh Khan becoming the most expensive uncapped player in the history of the Indian Premier League. Shahrukh Khan also had an exceptional payout picking up 9 crore. Fast bowlers were sought after in the day while spinners had tough luck out there in the middle. Modern day stalwarts like Adil Rashid, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Adam Zampa went unsold. Indian spinners were picked but had much lesser value than expected with Kuldeep Yadav going to Delhi Capitals for 2 crores and Yuzvendra Chahal picking up 6.5 from Rajasthan. An unfortunate incident occurred in the middle of the day after auctioneer Hugh Edmeades falling off the dais. Edmeades as the last updates suggest is stable and there is no threat to his health. Charu Sharma picked up after him and did a commendable job on a short notice. The day 2 is expected to be fast-paced in nature with franchise having a fairly low budget. Lahore Qalandars finally stop the Multan Sultans train in Pakistan Super League

Shaheen Shah Afridi’s men started their home leg in a tremendous fashion bringing a stop to the Multan Sultans train on Friday, 12 February. A huge 52-run victore for Lahore Qalandars meant that not only did they win two points they went up to the second spot in the points table with a big boost in their net run rate. Lahore dominated Sultans through the game, first with their batting exploits against a strong bowling lineup consisting of Shahnawaz Dahani and Imran Tahir who were very good in their last game. It was once again the terrific Fakhar Zaman who raked yet another half century of the PSL season and scored a 37-ball 60. His act was followed up by Kamran Ghulam (42 off 38), Mohammad Hafeez (43 off 29) and Phil Salt (26 off 13) which took their score up to 182 runs in their four overs. Returning for the bowling performance, Lahore knew that Multan had the firepower to chase this down. And rightly so since Multan have scored three double hundred scores this season. Lahore had to get either of the two openers early to stamp their authority in the game and they did so by removing in form Shan Masood in the third over of the game. Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi knew that Multan had to throw everything at them to chase the score down, so he tricked the opener with a change of pace in the final ball of the over. Masood - who was looking for a big shot - chose to check his hit reading the slower one, but only managed to lob it to covers, where a diving effort ended his night. Rashid Khan did the rest dismissing Mohammad Rizwan and Rilee Rossouw in back to back deliveries in the 9th over to more or less seal the fate of the game. From there on it was a similar story of Multan Sultans batsmen hitting boundaries and then getting out looking for big shots. Both big hitters - Tim David and Khushdil Shah had entertaining stays and blasted off from the word go, but failed to add anything significant to the scoreboard. The entire bowling unit of Lahore came to party picking at least two wickets each barring David Wiese, who was wicketless on the night but bowled with a superb economy of 6.5 in his four overs. Wickets came tumbling throughout the second half of the chase and Multan were bowled out for 130 runs in 19.3 overs. With the win Lahore Qalandars climbed to the second spot of the table which is still dominated by Sultans by 12 points from 7 games. Qalandars are four points behind them scoring 8 from 6 matches.

IND vs WI | 3rd ODI: Shreyas Iyer, pacers hand India 3-0 whitewash win vs West Indies

Some disappointing fielding effort from India and resistance from the West Indies lower order might have delayed the visitors' defeat but couldn't prevent them from suffering a 0-3 loss in this ODI series in Ahmedabad. Chasing 266 in 50 overs, the Indian pacers rattled West Indies' top and middle-order to reduce them to 82/7 in the 19th over before Odean Smith and Alzarri Joseph tried to steady the ship. Smith took on Kuldeep Yadav and hammered 36 runs in just 18 deliveries which included three maximums and as many fours during the course. He was eventually undone by Mohammed Siraj after being caught by Shikhar Dhawan. But Joseph and Hayden Walsh frustrated the Indian team further as they chipped in with a stand of 67 runs for the ninth wicket before Siraj eventually got rid of Walsh for 13 off 38. Later, Prasidh Krishna wrapped up the West Indies innings as he scalped the final wicket of Joseph who was caught in the deep by Kohli for 29 off 56 as the visiting side was bundled out for 169 to lose the match by 96 runs. Krishna and Siraj bagged a three-fer each while Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets apiece for India. Earlier, in the day, India were pushed on to the back foot after losing Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli early in the innings but Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer chipped in with a partnership of 110 runs for the fourth wicket. Both the batters struck individual fifties during the course with Iyer top-scoring with 80 off 111. Apart from these two, Washington Sundar and Deepak Chahar also made valuable contributions. While Sundar scored 33 off 34, Chahar struck a 38-ball 38 to help India put 265 in 50 overs on the board. Holder was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies after he scalped a four-wicket haul for 34 runs in 8 overs.
