‘He probably won't want to do it. He is happy’ - Moeen Ali on Kohli captaining again

Rohit Sharma's COVID-19 news has created several speculations and vague theories regarding who would captain the Indian team in the rescheduled final Test against England at Edgbaston.

According to some sources, the Indian opener is likely not to be a part of the final squad and will not captain the team. Well, it's not just the uncertainty of the captaincy, but also the management must find another opener who would give a company to the other Indian opener, Shubman Gill.

If Rohit wouldn't captain in the crucial Edgbaston Test, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah would be the strong contenders for the captaincy spot. The reason would be Pant's experience as a captain for the IPL team, Delhi Capitals and Bumrah being the vice-captain of this Test side.

But, many are speculating and hoping for the former Indian Test captain, Virat Kohli, to again display his mettle as a captain. Though the possibilities for it seem vague, any day a surprise can come out.

With Kohli taking India to a 2-1 lead from the last year's hauled Test series against England, including the remarkable wins at Lord's and Oval, many believe that in the rescheduled and final test, he must finish things in style as a captain.

From the opposite clan, England's star all-rounder, Moeen Ali, also thinks the same about Kohli taking up that role in the absence of Rohit Sharma.

"It's a tough one. I was thinking about this last night. Because Virat was captain before of the same series last year, I would probably give it to him, yeah, for this one game. But it's his call," Moeen told Sports Today.

Moeen cited that Kohli might turn the offer down if given to him. He feels Kohli's mind could be relaxed knowing he is only focussing on his batting.

"He probably won't want to do it. He is happy, and his mind is relaxed and saying, 'I'm never captaining Test cricket again'. So that can be also difficult. But yeah, I think it's a good idea. He has got the experience, and it's a big series for India," he pointed out.

Team India would be up against a resurgent England in the rescheduled fifth test at Edgbaston from 1 July.
