Hardik Pandya fined for MI's slow over rate [Source: AP]
On Saturday evening, Mumbai Indians (MI) extended their poor run in the IPL 2025, incurring a 36-run defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT). Apart from his team's disastrous defeat, MI captain Hardik Pandya also coped a hefty penalty for slow over rate offence.
Why Was Hardik Pandya Fined After GT vs MI Match?
MI skipper Hardik Pandya was fined by the IPL as his team failed to complete the full quota of overs within the stipulated time. As it was MI's first over rate offence of the season, Pandya was sanctioned a fine of INR 12 lakhs from his match fees.
Interestingly, Pandya missed the first game of the season following a ban imposed on him due to a similar offence in the previous IPL season. Notably, MI were found guilty of the slow over rate offence thrice in the IPL 2024, resulting in Pandya's ban from the 2025 season opener against Chennai Super Kings.
Will Hardik Pandya Be Banned From MI's Next IPL 2025 Match?
However, the BCCI and the IPL governing committee amended the rules for over rate offences ahead of the 2025 season.
According to the new law, the captains will be handed demerit points and fines for over-rate offences instead of serving match bans. So, despite MI's slow over rate offence, Pandya will participate in his side's next game against KKR.
MI's Poor Performance In IPL 2025
Led by Pandya, Mumbai Indians have been sub-par in the IPL 2025 season so far, suffering two consecutive defeats. After losing from CSK and GT, the five-time champions will take on KKR in their next encounter on March 31.
