Ever since the retirement of Sir Alastair Cook, England have struggled to find a stoic opener for their Test side. While Zak Crawley has shown some spark, his overall performance is under scrutiny. Newcomer Alex Lees, too, is failing to leave a mark with his batting.

In the ongoing County Championship Division One season, Emilio Gay has swirled up a storm with his batting in the top order playing for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club (NCCC). So far in 2022, Gay has amassed 799 runs from 12 matches, with 2 centuries and 4 fifties.

Gay, speaking to DailyMail, has opened up about his ambitions for England in five-day cricket.

"Opening the batting in England is not easy, but I think my game is up to it. I can score quite freely and I have good judgment around the punch. Technically I think I’m good enough,"

"From the moment I can remember, the goal has been to play test cricket for England. Breaking into that test team is something I’ve had my eye on, 100 percent."

Gay revealed that he had a conversation with Cook regarding scoring big runs and converting starts better.

Cook, on the other hand, lauded the Bedford-born's mental fortitude apart from his impeccable technique.

Overall, in 26 First-Class games, the 22-year-old has slammed 1,311 runs with three tons and six half-centuries since making his debut in 2019.
