South Africa have announced their squad for the upcoming tri-nation series in Pakistan, where they will face hosts Pakistan and New Zealand. The much-anticipated series will kick off on February 10 in Lahore, with South Africa set to take on New Zealand.
One of the most notable inclusions in the squad is fast bowler Gerald Coetzee. He makes his return after recovering from a left hamstring strain that he sustained during the Test series against Sri Lanka. His return will strengthen South Africa’s pace attack in the series.
The squad announced is for South Africa’s first match only, as several players are currently involved in the ongoing SA20 league. The first match of the tri-series will be played in Karachi on February 10. Head coach Rob Walter has named a 12-player squad for this game, including ODI captain Temba Bavuma, who will lead the team.
South Africa Introduces Six Uncapped Players
Among the new faces in the squad are six uncapped players. These include batter Matthew Breetzke from Dafabet Warriors, batter Meeka-eel Prince from North West University Dragons, fast bowler Gideon Peters, fast bowler Eathan Bosch from Hollywoodbets Dolphins, and spinner Senuran Muthusamy from Warriors. Western Province all-rounder Mihlali Mpongwana, who was part of the ODI squad against India in 2023, also gets another chance in the 50-over format.
This series is crucial for all three teams as it is their final set of games before the Champions Trophy begins on February 19. South Africa will face tough competition in the Champions Trophy, where they are placed in Group B with Afghanistan, Australia, and England.
The Proteas will finalise their squad after the SA20 Eliminator match on February 5. Keshav Maharaj and Heinrich Klaasen will also be available for the second ODI.
