Defending Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) champions Fortune Barishal have asked the tournament organisers to postpone the upcoming season, saying they don’t have enough time to get ready.

The BPL Governing Council recently announced that the next season of the T20 league will start in mid-December and include only five teams. They also invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from companies interested in owning a team for the next five seasons (from the 12th to 16th editions).

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) listed ten possible franchise regions, including Barishal, Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, and others.

Fortune Barishal pleads for BPL rescheduling

Following this announcement, rumors spread that Fortune Barishal might not take part in the next BPL. The confusion grew after team captain Tamim Iqbal and the team’s management announced they were boycotting cricket activities under the leadership of Aminul Islam, calling his position “illegal.”

However, team owner Mizanur Rahman later clarified that they are not refusing to play, but simply asking for more preparation time. He said that the schedule is too tight, and the team needs extra time to arrange funds, sign players, and set up logistics.

"I haven't said that I won't play in the BPL. All I said is that in this short span of time it will be difficult for a team like us to play, and so we wanted them to extend the time. Everyone is calling me and I told them (BCB) that it's too small and it is becoming impossible for a team like us (to prepare for the tournament)," Mizanur told Cricbuzz.

He added that Fortune Barishal remains committed to cricket and will participate if the schedule is adjusted.

Despite Barishal’s request, the BPL Governing Council has confirmed that the next edition will go ahead as planned between mid-December and mid-January in a compact window featuring five teams.
