Eoin Morgan names duo as front-runners for England's white-ball captain

Eoin Morgan's retirement has opened up the debate about who will take over the reins of England's white-ball teams.

Morgan called curtains on his illustrious career after leading England in 126 games across ODIs and T20Is. He now has disclosed his two favourite candidates to take over the mantle with the ICC T20 World Cup nearing soon.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Morgan said,

"Thankfully, this is not the decision that I have to make. There are some obvious candidates: Jos Buttler being one of them and Moeen Ali being the other. There are some tremendous leaders in that group. Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Chris Jordan, Chris Woakes."

"Jos Buttler has been an unbelievable vice-captain, and when he stepped in, he was in charge. He not only commands respect with the bat but also as a leader in the group. He commands tremendous respect."

Buttler already has the experience of leading England in 8 international games, while Moeen is yet to put on the captain's hat.

The Ireland-born led England to their first-ever 50-overs World Cup title in 2019 when they edged past New Zealand in the final.

Under his guidance, England reached the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup in India, losing to winners West Indies in a close encounter at Eden Gardens.

The left-hander also revealed the moment he felt that his career as an England cricketer was made and dusted.

"That moment came for me in Amsterdam. I've just come to an end. I'm glad I was in a sound enough space to understand that feeling and be well aware of what it meant,"

"The day it hit me, it was quite a sad day, reaching the end of such a special journey but in many ways since that day I've been incredibly proud and content with the decision and excited for English cricket going forward," Morgan said.

The 35-year-old is the Three Lions' leading run-scorer in T20Is and ODIs with 2,458 and 6,957 runs, respectively.

He also played 16 Tests, scoring 700 runs, including 2 hundred and three fifties.

The former KKR made his international debut with Ireland in 2006.
