England tour of Bangladesh postponed indefinitely, paves way for English players availability in IPL

England’s team tour of Bangladesh, which was supposed to begin from mid-September has now been postponed indefinitely. Reports suggest that it was the decision of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) can not be ruled out either considering that mid-September also marks the start of the second leg of the Indian Premier League.

The England Men’s team Director of Cricket Ashley Giles had earlier said that the English players will either be part of the tour program to Bangladesh or will take a rest instead of playing in the IPL because of injury concerns.

Now that the BCB seemed to have postponed the tour, giving Covid-19 protocols as the reason, it also paves way for English cricketers to participate in the IPL as it would be the ideal preparation for the World T20.

However, with this postponement and English players potentially playing in the IPL becoming clearer, it would be interesting to see if England’s Pakistan tour goes as planned. The English Men’s and Women’s teams are to play two T20Is on October 14 and 15. But with the start of the World T20 opening ceremony being very close to those dates and quarantine norms yet not finalised, will England take the risk?

According to Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ehsan Mani, the tour is still on. “Wasim Khan has been in discussions with the ECB and agreed on the tour arrangements with Tom Harrison. As far as we are concerned, the visit is going ahead,” he was quoted as saying by Daily Mail UK.

ENG vs IND | Mayank Agarwal ruled out of first Test with concussion

India’s batting woes do not seem to end as another player has been injured and ruled out of the first Test against England starting August 4 at Trent Bridge Nottingham. Mayank Agarwal was concussed trying to duck a bouncer from Mohammad Siraj in the nets. It has been reported that he fell down at the batting crease and was attended to by the team Physio before walking out holding his head from behind. This has now posed problems at finding the opener for the team in the first Tets as the top choice openers to partners Rohit Sharma, in Shubman Gill and Agarwal have both been ruled out. Whether or not the team would opt to go with KL Rahul as an opener is a question that could best be answered when we see the team sheet. The Karnataka batter played at number five in the practice match at Durham and scored a century and has been primarily been looked at middle-order batter. The other two options with the team are Hanuma Vihari and Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was brought in as reserve player. While Easwaran has opened in domestic cricket, Vihari has been used as a stop-gap opener many a time. Ajinkya Rhane, the team Vice Captain ruled out Cheteshwar Pujara batting as an opener saying, “Pujara is our No. 3 batsman. Who'll open our innings we are again finalising our combination, it's not yet finalised. Pujara has been really solid for us as No. 3 batsman and he'll continue to bat at No. 3.” "As [far as] opening bat [goes], the captain, coach and management will decide the combination and you'll get to know soon,” he added in a press briefing on Monday, August 2. However, there was good news for the Indian team as well when Rahane said that he was ready to play in the first Test as he has been declared fully fit. "I had a small niggle but I'm fully fit now," he said. "Whatever the physios and trainers asked me to, I've completed all those stuffs. I'm looking forward to the Test match. I'm completely prepared.”

Matthew Wade to captain Australia against Bangladesh in T20I series

Wicketkeeper Batsman Matthew Wade has been named as the captain of the Australian Men’s team that would play a five-match series against Bangladesh starting August 3 in Dhaka. Regular skipper Aaron Finch got injured while playing against West Indies in the recent T20I series and flew back to Australia. Alex Carey was named the ODI captain in Finch’s absence, but Wade has been given the opportunity in T20Is. "When you come in and take over from someone it's just about giving the ability for those guys to really take ownership of their game and at the top of the mark, they need to execute,” Wade said after being given the new responsibility. The 33-year-old Hobart Hurricanes skipper has also led Victoria and Tasmania in domestic competitions and hence the pressure won’t be under much pressure. But he doesn’t shy away from saying that it is going to be challenging. "It's a different challenge. Thankfully I've played for Australia in the middle order a lot, especially in one day cricket,” he said. "I'm obviously wicketkeeping so the distance between the bowler and myself is a lot greater and that means there's a lot more responsibility on the individual," he added. The five T20Is have been cramped in a duration of just seven days with the fifth T20I taking place on August 9. Squads: Australia: Ashton Agar, Wes Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey, Dan Christian, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Mitchell Marsh, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Josh Philippe, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Matthew Wade (captain), Adam Zampa. Travel reserves: Nathan Ellils, Tanveer Sangha. Punjab Kings’ acquisition of CPL side St. Lucia, leads to name change from Zouks to Kings

The Caribbean Premier League franchise Saint Lucia Zouks have been renamed to Saint Lucia Kings to get it closer in recognition to its sister franchise in the Indian Premier League, the Punjab Kings. The team now also sports a new logo, totally different from the previous one. The team, in a media release, confirmed the news and wrote an explanation behind it. It said, "The new name and logo are consistent with the KPH Dream Cricket brand while still capturing the essence of Saint Lucia through the name and national colours of Saint Lucian Flag," the release said. KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited acquired the ownership rights of the franchise in 2020. It is the same company that owns the Punjab Kings in IPL and that franchise also changed its name from Kings XI Punjab to its current name of Punjab Kings before the start of the 2021 season. "The brand name and monogram, lion in the team's logo stand for exuberance. While the blue epitomises the sky and the sea, specifically the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea which encircle the country, the roaring lion monogram infuses vigour and vibrancy,” the release further added stating that the main identity of Saint Lucia as the country has been retained. Daren Sammy, the former St. Lucia captain who quit this year to become the mentor and Assistant Coach of the team while speaking on this occasion said, "I love the logo and I love the new name, and I truly hope that the name can inspire our players to play like the true Kings that we are.” Earlier, after IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals bought majority stakes in the Barbados based franchise of the CPL, its name was also changed to Brabadois Royals from Barbados Tridents. The 2021 edition of the CPL will take place between August 26 and September 15, at Warner Park in St Kitts & Nevis.
