England In Big Trouble | Ollie Pope Ruled Out Of The Remainder Of Ashes 2023

England batter, Ollie Pope, has unfortunately been ruled out of the remaining Ashes 2023 matches due to a severe shoulder injury sustained during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s last week.

England Cricket has formally confirmed the unfortunate development through a statement, revealing that medical scans on Monday exposed the full severity of Pope's injury. As per the statement, the England vice-captain will require surgical intervention thereby ruling him out of the rest of the summer campaign.

The ECB’s statement also stated that Pope will embark on a close-knit rehabilitation program under the supervision of the England and Surrey medical teams.

Meanwhile, England has refrained from naming a substitute for the upcoming third Ashes Test at Headingley which is set to kick-off on Thursday.

For the uninitiated, Pope's injury occurred while fielding in the first innings at Lord’s and was later exacerbated as the team was under the mistaken impression that a substitute fielder could not be deployed, leading to a miscommunication with the match officials.

Dan Lawrence likely to replace injured VC

Despite his injury, the 25-year-old batter showed tremendous grit and courage by continuing to bat, where he scored 42in the first innings followed by a 10-ball 3 at his customary number three position.

With Pope ruled out, England’s squad has an additional batter in the form of Dan Lawrence, who is likely to be featured in the starting line-up for the crucial third Test at Headingley. Lawrence's international Test record includes 551 runs across 11 Tests with four half-centuries. On the other hand, the Essex-born batter’s First-Class cricket career showcases an impressive 6050 runs in 113 matches which includes 14 centuries and 28 half-centuries.

England is currently in an abysmal position, trailing 2-0 in the Ashes 2023, and they need a win at all costs to stay alive in the series. On the contrary, the visitors are in a strong position and they will aim to capitalize on their brilliant run of form by sealing the series with a win.
