ENG vs NZ | 'Trying to ride the crest of a wave'- Root opines after his 27th Test hundred

Joe Root never seems to stop. The Englishman continues to climb mountains and discover the uncharted territories when it comes to Test cricket.

The ongoing Trent Bridge game was no different as England's No. 4 again came into focus, smashing his 27th Test ton on a pitch that inarguably is a graveyard for the bowlers.

With New Zealand managing a mammoth score of 553 in their first innings, it was down to England's timid batting unit to lead a resurgence.

Despite the wicket being hostile to bowlers, odds were stacked in favour of New Zealand due to England's vulnerable batting line-up. However, opener Alex Lees (67) and the new No. 3 Ollie Pope (145) gave the Kiwis a run for their money.

As usual, Root was at his best and ensured that the Three Lions maintained their firmness in the match, courtesy of his unbeaten 163-run knock.

Before the play began on Day 4, the ex-England skipper was asked about his prolific run. In reply, he had this to say:

"I, obviously, feel very good at the minute. Trying to ride the crest of a wave. I think when you play for a while, you understand that it doesn't always go like this. Try to enjoy it and make most of it while it's there. I am certainly feeling in a good spot," Root said as quoted to Sky Sports.

Root shared a 187-run stand with Pope for the third wicket. Speaking on his teammate's performance, the 31-year-old said, "I was buzzing it. I really enjoyed batting with him out there. You could see him (Pope) really enjoying himself. Look how much it means to him.

It was really special. He worked really hard. It's been a tough year or so. He has had injuries. He has taken into this role really well. It was a special day, and I am pleased that I was there to enjoy it with him."

Further, the veteran opened up on his captain Ben Stokes' reaction. Stokes, who himself scored a quick-fire 46, looked pretty astounding while applauding Root for yet another hundred.

"It's a bit surreal seeing someone like Ben who's done what he's done and has the ability he does have a reaction like that!" Root stated.
