ENG vs NZ | 2nd Test Day 4 | Boult's havoc, Young and Conway's half-centuries keep England on brinks

In what turned out to be another exciting day, New Zealand pacers led a spirited fightback, which was followed by vital contributions from Will Young and Devon Conway.

Returning from the overnight score of 473/5, England batters Ben Foakes and Joe Root made an early move on. The first half-hour of the day had audacity written all over it, with the Englishmen rapidly decreasing New Zealand's first innings lead.

In no time, Foakes brought up his fifty. But what transpired next was the Great England collapse. After Root's dismissal for 176, England's recent ghosts returned to haunt them, with hosts reduced to 516/5 to 539/10.

Veteran Boult and debutant Bracewell inflicted all the damage, wiping off England's tail apace.

Gaining a 14-run lead, New Zealand hoped to stretch it further, aiming for a good start by their openers. However, James Anderson exuded his magic yet again to send the stumps knocking, becoming the first pacer to take the 650th Test wicket in the form of Tom Latham.

For the visitors, it was their second-wicket stand that eased the nerves. Young and Conway recorded a 100-run partnership to help the Kiwis march strongly. Conway lost his wicket to Jack Leach, and then Matty Potts struck to send Henry Nicholls packing. An awful mix-up between Young and Daryl Mitchell resulted in the former's downfall and also made way for England's remarkable comeback.

Mitchell took the innings forward, adding vital runs along with Tom Blundell and Michael Bracewell. However, Broad and Potts kept New Zealand at bay, forcing false shots to stem the dismissals of Blundell and Bracewell, respectively.

Another brain-fade late in the day caused Tim Southee's run-out, leaving the Nottingham Test open for every result.

At stumps, New Zealand sat on the score of 224 for the loss of seven wickets. Mitchell and Matt Henry stayed unbeaten at 32 and eight runs, respectively.
