Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav punched out 117 runs against England at Nottingham in the final T20I of the series. In an innings equal parts clever and brutal, the middle-order batter started patiently before unleashing a sequence of 14 boundaries and six sixes during his 55-ball stay at the crease.
Despite his mastery with the bat in a monumental run-chase, India fell short of their target by 17 runs. However, the ‘Men in Blue’ still claimed the three-match series 2-1.
During the course of his innings, Yadav broke several batting records in T20I cricket. Here is a detailed look at the landmarks achieved by the 31-year-old cricketer.
ENG vs IND: SKY reaches new heights as ENG claim consolation win
Suryakumar Yadav’s 117 now marks the highest score in men’s T20I for a number four batter. Previously, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell clubbed 113* against India in a 2019 game.
He also holds the highest T20I score for an Indian cricketer away from home. Moreover, it is now the highest T20I score for India in a losing cause. On both counts, the previous record-holder was KL Rahul for his 110* against West Indies in 2016.
Additionally, Yadav became the second Indian (after KL Rahul) and seventh overall to score a T20I century while batting at number four or below.
With his 117, the right-hander scored 89 runs more than the second-highest scorer (Shreyas Iyer’s 28) of the Indian innings. Previously, Rahul’s 101* against England at Manchester in 2018 marked a difference of 69 runs with the next best scorer, Rohit Sharma’s 32.
He is also one of only four cricketers worldwide to hit a T20I century in England for a non-English player. The elegant batsman joins an elite list featuring his teammates KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Australian white-ball captain Aaron Finch.
Among Indian cricketers who debuted after 30, Yadav is only the second player to score an international hundred. The only other player to do so was legendary batsman Vijay Hazare, who made his debut in 1946 at 31.
