ENG vs IND| 2nd T20I | Performance Indicator Judgement

England and India battled it out in the second T20I of the series at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Much to the pleasure of the Indian fans, their team redeemed themselves from the dramatic loss they had at the same venue in the rescheduled Test match a few days back.

Just like the 1st T20I, the Indian side led by Rohit Sharma was clinical in all the departments of the game. On the back of batting heroics by Ravindra Jadeja (46* of 26) and the bowling excellence of Bhuvneswar Kumar (3-15 in 3 overs), the visitors won the match by 49 runs.

On the basis of performance indicators, we try and find out the standout performer of the match.

First, let us take a look at the Contribution Factor of the players during India’s batting innings.

Before delving into further analysis, it must be made clear that, in case of the bowlers the lower the CF, the better.

So, if Indian batting is taken into consideration, the best performer is quite evidently Ravindra Jadeja.

If English bowling is considered Richard Gleeson was the pick of their bowlers.

Now, moving forward to the second innings.

ENG vs IND | Debutant Richard Gleeson impresses, picks up the second-best figures on debut in T20Is for England

India posted a competitive total of 170-8 after being asked to bat first in the second T20I against England on Saturday. Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bowl first on a pitch that seemed to have something for the faster bowlers. After losing the first T20I at Southampton by a thumping 50-run margin, England decided to bring in a few changes to their lineup, heading into the all-important second fixture at Birmingham. The hosts brought in all-rounder David Willey and handed out a debut cap to a 34-year-old pacer from Lancashire, Richard Gleeson, who bowled exceptionally well. Gleeson has been one of the names making the rounds in English domestic cricket for the last few years. Even though he started his career at Northamptonshire, it was his move to shift to Lancashire that initiated a change in his career graph. His performances for Lancashire were enough to earn him further franchise opportunities in the Abu Dhabi T10 League and for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL). Also, he earned call-ups to the England Lions squad for their tour to Australia in 2020 and England's enlarged training squad later in the year. In the last few years, he has represented various franchises, including Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and Maratha Arabians, Team Abu Dhabi in the T10 league. India's innings got off to an electrifying start, courtesy of skipper Rohit Sharma who scored an aggressive 31 off 20 deliveries laced with three fours and two sixes before he miscued a pull shot off Gleeson's bowling. The debutant bowled a quick short ball that rushed the Indian skipper, who, otherwise is exceptional with the pull shot, couldn't control it then. One big fish was followed by another as Gleeson dismissed Virat Kohli, whose torrid run in international cricket continues. Kohli tried to throw the kitchen sink at a back of a length delivery around off which bounced a bit more. The Lancashireman did not stop there as he sent Rishabh Pant back to the dugout the very next delivery. Pant charged down the pitch and swung across a length ball but only managed to edge it to Jos Buttler, who completed a regulation catch. Not only did he pick up two wickets in that over, but he also managed to convert it into a double-wicket maiden. Gleeson ended up with impressive figures of 3-15 of his four overs. His figures were the second-best figures on debut by an English bowler in T20Is. Best bowling figures for Eng on T20I debut: 4/24 - Jon Lewis 3/15 - Richard Gleeson 3/16 - Darren Gough 3/22 - David Willey

Virat Kohli's coach Rajkumar Sharma hits back at Kapil Dev's statement

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli's childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has hit back at legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev for the recent statement on the 33-year-old batsman's place in the T20I team. Kohli has been in poor form in the shortest format of the game this year. The iconic Indian cricketer could manage only two half-centuries in 16 outings during the recent season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He endured another poor outing in the second T20I against England, scoring just one run. Despite his ongoing lean patch, the Delhi batter is among India's most prolific run-scorers in the format. Before the ongoing Edgbaston T20I, Kohli has scored 663 runs in his last 19 innings at an average of 47.35 and a strike-rate of 136.13 with six 50+ scores. But, with the likes of Deepak Hooda and Surya Kumar Yadav doing well, Dev recently said on ABP News that if Ravichandran Ashwin could be dropped from the Test team, then so can Kohli from T20Is. "Now the situation is such that you might be forced to bench Kohli from T20 playing eleven. If world No. 2 bowler Ashwin can be dropped from the Test side then the world No. 1 batter can also be dropped. Virat is not batting at a level which we have seen him do over the years. He has made a name because of his performances but if he isn't performing, then you can't keep the performing youngsters out of the team," said Dev. Reacting to the World Cup-winning Indian captain's statement, Kohli's childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, expressed that he does not support the legendary all-rounder's views. He further asked why Kohli is being judged by every innings, given the fact that he has done brilliantly well in the format for a decade. Sharma signed off by stating that the BCCI will not jump to the decision of benching Kohli for the T20 World Cup. "I do not support the statements made by Kapil Dev on Virat Kohli. Nothing big happened with Virat that such kind of statement has been issued. Why is there so much hurry with Virat, he has done so well for the country. Making 70 international centuries is not a small thing. I do not think the board will make a decision to have him sit on the bench," he told ANI. The under-fire batter will look to silence his critics when he takes guard in the final T20I in Nottingham on July 10.
