The England Cricket Board is exploring the possibilities of having IPL franchise-owned teams in its premier hundred-ball competition, The Hundred.

The Hundred is England's one of most-loved white-ball tournaments where eight teams participate.

The marquee event is generally conducted in the July-August window in both men's and women's categories every year. Its 2024 season begins tomorrow, with Oval Invincibles taking on Birmingham Phoenix in the tournament opener.

ECB in talks with IPL owners for investment in The Hundred

According to The Times of India, the ECB is trying to persuade the IPL owners to invest in The Hundred.

As the report claims, the apex body of English cricket has even offered private investors a lucrative 49 per cent stake in all teams, with the host franchise retaining the remaining 51 per cent.

ECB's master plan aims to elevate The Hundred's stature on the global T20 circuit while simultaneously generating finance for its domestic cricket.

The ECB's chief executive, Mr Richard Gould, has clarified that the board won't hand over the tournament's control to the investors, while the teams will be allowed to sell their shares fully or partially.

"Control comes at different levels, it comes at team level and it comes at competition level -- that's not something we are ceding control of," Gould said.

IPL franchise-owned teams across the globe

Several IPL franchises have invested in multiple global T20 leagues. Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders have made their mark in almost every lucrative tournament, while the Royals franchise has invested in the Caribbean Premier League and SA20.

Punjab Kings own St Lucia in the CPL, while the Sunrisers own the Cape Town-based team in the SA20.

However, Royal Challengers Bengaluru still remains one of the most-followed franchises that don't have a stake in overseas leagues.
