Auckland Aces head honcho Doug Watson has joined the New Zealand squad at Tauranga as the batting coach for the first Test versus England.

With New Zealand's full-time batting coach Luke Ronchi taking a break in the upcoming Test, Watson will fill in the role temporarily as the former will resume his duties at Wellington from the second match of the England series.

Watson's coaching profile is unfurled across different territories, having stints with Namibia, Mumbai Indians, KwaZulu-Natal Inland, Wellington Firebirds and Auckland Aces.

Being South Africa's domestic stalwart, the 49-year-old has played 288 matches, scoring 12,348 runs.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand camp has been jolted with Kyle Jamieson's injury, who is ruled out of the Test series against England due to a suspected stress fracture.

The action will kick-off at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui from February 16 onwards.
